Open House

It was so nice to see so many of you tonight at our "Meet and Greet." I can already tell we have an amazing class and are going to have an incredible year.

Parents - If you didn't get a chance to fill out all of the forms and info tonight, please send it in with your child on Friday. I will staple a checklist in your child's agenda on Friday so you know if there are any missing forms or papers that were forgotten. Thanks again, and it was so great meeting all of you!

Kids - See you on Friday! Come willing to work hard and have tons of fun! I hope you're ready for an exciting year. :)

First Day!

We had a FANTASTIC first day of school on Friday. Everyone was so excited to be there. We met new friends, created our classroom community (which the kids have named H.C. Community - Haralson's Cool Community!), decided and agreed on our classroom rules, rewards, and consequences, and enjoyed learning more about our new fabulous school! I can already tell that we have an amazing group of kids and are going to have a wonderful year.

Third grade can be a tough year, but it will also be a ton of fun too as long as everyone puts in their best effort and follows the rules. Responsibility and behavior expectations in third grade are higher, so only one warning will be given before a conduct cut is taken. I will begin taking conduct cuts on Monday. Please help to reinforce good behavior at home by reminding your children to watch their talking and to make sure they are paying attention and following directions at all times.

I am looking forward to a great year. Thank you for all of your support and encouragement that made our first day back a huge success!

First Week Update

We had a fantastic first week of school learning new things, getting to know our classmates a little better, and having tons of fun!

We have made "Me Collages" to tell more about ourselves (just like Judy Moody!), learned about place value and different ways to write numbers through fun math stations, and put together our unique classroom community. We have written and signed our classroom Constitution, created a classroom pledge, and even designed our own class "money" that will be earned for doing our class jobs and for exceptional behavior!

We will be working together this year to build each other up and help everyone to be their absolute best. We have an amazing group of students and I can't wait to see what all this year will hold.

3 weeks!

Can you believe we are already starting our 4th week of school?! It's pretty amazing how fast it already seems to be going. We have had a great start to the year and I know with a little hard work we can continue to improve and make this year exceptional! We have had some trouble lately with too much talking and not enough paying attention and following directions. This takes away opportunities for fun hands-on activities and learning games since there are so many distractions. Please take time to review with your child our class/school rules of always doing your best, being responsible, respectful, and safe. They know what they are expected to do, but reminders never hurt. :)

Thanks for all you do to make your child's year a success!! We couldn't do it without you.

Reminders

Just a few reminders -

Progress reports will go home Wednesday - please be sure to sign the second page and return both pages to school on Thursday.

Friday is our field trip to GYSTC in Newnan. Due to the field trip, Spelling and Vocabulary tests will be on THURSDAY this week. Contracts are due Thursday as well.

Scholastic orders are due Friday!! Help us meet our $200 goal!

ITBS testing is next week. Please make sure your child is at school and prepared each day.

Also, please remember to not take papers out of your child's folders. All of their graded work comes home in their BRONCO folder on Monday. Other than this, please leave all other work in the appropriate folder. We are having problems with students not having the necessary materials for school because papers were left at home. This is your child's responsibility, but your help in encouraging this is greatly appreciated. We will clean the folders out from time to time at school, usually when we complete a unit. Until then, they need to have all papers every day. This will help to ensure they have everything they need for school as well as to complete any homework.

Thank you so much to everyone who placed an order last week to Scholastic... we met our goal of $200!!! Thanks to you, we were able to order a whole class set of Hour of the Olympics, and The Chalk Box Kid, as well as complete a set of Flat Stanley and add several new books to our class library. Thank you so much for fostering your children’s success in reading!!

Flat Stanley Project

This week we are reading a story called Flat Stanley. It is a book about a boy, Stanley, who is flattened “like a pancake” when a bulletin board falls on him. He is perfectly fine, except for being flat. The story is about how Stanley copes with being 2-dimensional. He has several interesting journeys: he is flown as a kite, he can slide under doors, he is mailed in an envelope to see his friend in California, and he even helps solve a crime!

To go along with this story, as well as our studies of writing and maps, our class is taking part in a world-wide Flat Stanley exchange! We have made Flat Stanleys, and are mailing them to other classes across the country and the world.

For the second part of this project, some of the classes we are sending our Stanleys to are also sending one to us! So, we need volunteers to host their Stanleys. If you are willing to host a Stanley in your home for a few days please let me know. If you would like to be a host, you will be responsible for treating Stanley like a guest in your home. Show him around your neighborhood, and our town. You will also need to take pictures of Stanley in each place you take him, so we can send him back to his home with some souvenirs! It should be a very fun project and will allow us to learn about other cultures around the world, as well as give them a glimpse of ours!

Studying/Homework Reminder

Reminders about studying and homework:

Studying is essential to good academic performance.  Good study habits not only help 
your child perform well on tests throughout the year, but are essential for years to come.
Studying should be done nightly as a part of your child's daily homework.  Upcoming 
tests are always listed in our weekly newsletter so that you are aware of what your child
needs to be studying.  When study guides are sent home, a good amount of time should
be dedicated to reviewing the material on these study guides, as well as on other information
they have been given (papers in their subject folder).  Please stress to your child the 
importance of studying nightly for tests.  

Homework is given daily and is expected to be turned in the day after it is assigned.
Points are deducted daily for late work, and this is also reflected in your child's
weekly responsibility grade.  We have been having trouble lately with students not completing
their homework.  Homework is given to reinforce what we do in class each day.  It is very
important that homework be completed.  I write homework down on the board daily for students to
copy into their agendas.  Please feel free to help your child with his/her homework as you see need, 
but let your child do the majority of the work himself/herself.  Students need to be able to complete 
work and find answers on their own as much as possible.  This will help to better equip your child 
for work ahead.

Book Club Orders

Initially I asked that all October Scholastic orders be placed by tomorrow (Friday, Oct. 23), but since I was so late getting them to you, I have extended the deadline to next Tuesday (Oct. 27). If you place your order online there are 2 additional catalogs you can choose from, as well as more selections for the Lucky catalog. Remember... every time you order books through scholastic you are saving money as they are cheaper than if you went to the store to buy them, AND we receive free books for our classroom!

Sedimentary Sandwiches! - Wish List

Please have your child bring in one sandwich condiment on Thursday (Oct. 29). We are going to be making sedimentary sandwiches. This could be peanut butter, marshmallow cream, honey, jelly, etc. We will also need a couple loaves of bread for Thursday – this can be a partial loaf or whatever you’ve got on the counter (I can send any extra back home).

GREEK DAY!

Just a reminder that Greek day is this Friday, November 13th!

All students should come dressed in ancient Greek attire and ready for fun and learning! It should prove to be an exciting and enriching day. Please make sure that your child is still following our school dress code and has tennis shoes if he/she will have PE that day. Thank you to all our volunteers and we look forward to seeing you Friday!
