Important Information for 3rd Grade Mrs. Haralson’s Class 2009-2010 Attendance – School begins at promptly at 8:00am, but as most students who ride the bus arrive at 7:30, “morning work” activities begin then. Students are tardy if they arrive after 8:00 and must get a tardy slip from the office to be admitted to class. Dismissal is at 2:30pm. Please note that students may not be checked out from the office after 2pm. Unless students are sick they should be at school. A written excuse must be sent when a child is absent from school—these are filed in the office.
Homework – I believe that homework is necessary for practicing skills that have been learned or for enriching the classroom experience. On the other hand, I don’t believe in overloading students will busywork! When homework is given I expect it to be turned in the following morning. I review homework and write it on the board every afternoon with the class. I also review everything they should be taking home each day before they pack up. It is your child’s responsibility to write down his/her homework each day, take home the necessary materials, and turn their homework in when it is due. Students will not be allowed to call home if they forget their work. Students should pack their book-bags at night with all the materials needed for the next day. Organization is the key to success! Thank you for helping us by encouraging this at home as well!
Folders – We have 4 folders that we will use daily. Each folder corresponds with a different subject (Yellow: Reading/Language Arts, Red: Math, Blue: Science, Green: Social Studies). If your child has homework, it can be found in the appropriate subject folder. These folders will only come home when your child has homework in a particular subject, or an upcoming test. Everything in your child’s subject folders needs to come back to school everyday! Please do not clean out your child’s folders; we will clean them out at school. Grades are sent home separately in their cub folders on Mondays.
AR Program – This is a program that aids us in checking the reading level and comprehension of our children by allowing them to choose books that interest them. AR participation for all 3rd grade students is mandatory. I will work with each child individually to help everyone set monthly goals that they will work to achieve. Various incentives will also be provided throughout the year for children who meet monthly goals.
Birthdays – Please email me or send in a note if you would like to bring in a snack for your child’s birthday. Make sure there is enough for all children in the class and that it is not something that will be difficult to distribute. Cookie-cakes, cookies, rice crispy treats, and cupcakes are always great! We will have it during our regular snack time. Also, if you are planning on inviting students to your child’s birthday party, invitations can only be passed out at school if you are inviting the entire class, (or all boys/girls). These must be given to me and I will pass them out.
Snacks – We have snack time after specials each day. Your child needs to bring in a healthy snack such as fruit, cheese-its, crackers, granola bars, cheese, or fruit snacks. Please no fruit by the foot type snacks, or anything messy! Your child may bring in water to drink during the day. Please do not send in any drinks other than water.
Lunch money and Transportation notes – Lunch money should be sent in an envelope with your child’s name, my name, and the amount of money enclosed. Transportation notes must include your child’s full name, my name, and the number/name of the bus they will be riding (if applicable). Transportation changes cannot be accepted via email or phone; you will need to send in or fax a signed note.
Management Plan Good behavior is essential to academic success. In third grade we will be using a conduct cut system. A conduct cut is a deduction from your child’s conduct grade. General misbehavior will be a one-point deduction, but more significant misbehavior will result in a greater deduction (i.e. disrespect, defiance, etc…). Each student is given a 100 in conduct at the beginning of each 9-week grading period. Students will be given a verbal warning before a cut is given unless the severity of the offense requires immediate disciplinary action. Conduct cuts will be taken for not following our Classroom Constitution. (Please note – I also implement a reward system for exceptional student behavior and responsibility). If a student receives an office referral 5 points will be automatically deducted from his/her conduct grade. If the office referral results in an in-school suspension 12 points will be deducted. If a student is suspended from school their conduct grade will be dropped to an “F’. In your student’s Bronco folder there is a section on the weekly report where I will record your child’s conduct grade each week. In addition, I will attach a note to your child’s agenda if he/she lost a point that day. Please sign this note and return it to school the following day.
Grading Policy Communication is an essential element in creating a successful school year. We are looking forward to a very productive year. In an effort to clarify my grading policy, please review this with your child. All class work is expected to be turned in the day it is assigned. If your child does not complete the work on that day, he/she will be allowed to finish it for homework to turn in the following day. There will be no penalty if it is turned in by that time. Homework will be assigned each afternoon. Homework is to be turned in the day after it is assigned. Work that is not complete or turned in on time will be completed during specials and/or recess. Ten points will also be deducted each day an assignment is late. If your child does not turn in an assignment, you will receive a No Work form home in his/her agenda that afternoon. These are to be signed and returned the following day. I appreciate your help in enforcing this policy. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me.
