TALMUD TORAH DAY SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION Fall 2008 SHALOM! This is my 15th year teaching at The Talmud Torah of St. Paul Day School and … it’s great! During the first 2 months of the year we are working in two areas: soccer and fitness. The school participates in the President’s Challenge Fitness Test, a nationwide fitness program, which many of you may remember from your youth (for good, I expect…). The students run ¼ mile in 2nd grade, ½ mile (some students run the whole mile) in 3rd and 4th grade and the whole mile in 5th to 8th grade (cardiovascular endurance). They also do pull-ups and push-ups (upper body strength), sit-ups (abdominal strength) sit and reach (flexibility) and they run a short shuttle run (legs strength and agility). In soccer we work on fundamental skills: passing, controlling the ball, kicking, dribbling, heading, throwing. Of course, we put all these skills together and we play a lot. (Number Soccer is their favorite game…). We continue this year with a strong After School Athletic Program, thanks to students' and parents' support. We have a 5th and 6th Soccer Team and we are participating again in the League of Independents School Teams (LIST) conference. And this year we have a 7-8 Soccer Team too. They play in the SSYO (South Side Youth Organization). Rafi Forbush and Hector Sztainer are the coaches of the 5-6 Soccer Team. Rafi Forbush, Mark Glotter and Hector Sztainer are coaching the 7-8 Soccer team. I’m very proud of having former student Rafi ( Day School and TCJMS) being a role model for our current students. Basketball season is coming soon. Be ready! SHANAH TOVAH, a good a peaceful year to us all! Thanks for your support! HECTOR **********************************************
