Writing Workshop Writing Workshop

The month of November will begin a new unit of Non-Fiction question and answer books. Your child will be motivated and doing a lot of research by looking in books to learn facts about their self-selected topic.

During the month of October, we will be defining Writing Workshop in our classrooms and writing focused personal narratives, also known as, Small Moments.  During Writing Workshop, we will:

  • Build a community of writers who can work productively and respectfully every day in writing workshop.
  • Study the works of famous authors like Vera B. Williams, Angela Johnson, Jane Yolen and Ezra Jack Keats to see how they create stories out of the details of their own lives.
  • Share narratives or retellings of at least two appropriately sequenced events both orally and through sketches and words.
  • Learn how to zoom in on one important moment and tell it from beginning to middle to end.
  • Experience the opportunity to engage in individual writing conferences to discuss what we are doing as writers each day.
  • Learn strategies for making revisions to a favorite piece.
  • Celebrate our first unit with the publication of a treasured memory!

Writing Workshop is an essential part of the day .  Research has shown that one of the most significant factors impacting a child's later literacy is the opportunity to take the moments of his/her life and spin them into stories.
