Home page Welcome to Mrs. Gigliello's Web Page!!
Bell Top Elementary

** Please be sure your child has a hat, gloves and scarf to wear on the playground.  We will be going out every day!!!****

Mark your calendars:

  • Dec. 3rd - 1/2 Day Parent Conferences (dismissal 11:30)
  • Dec. 18th - 4th Grade Chorus Concert
  • Dec. 24th - Jan. 2nd - Holiday Recess

Parent Portal

You are now able to view your child's grades online using the link, username and password that was handed out to you at Open House.  Please use this as a tool to check assignments, check your child's progress and missing assignments.  If your child has a score of "1" or it is marked "completed" with a green check that means that is was a REDO and it was handed back to your child to fix and then they must hand it back in to raise their grade.  All papers that are redos are marked with an "R" at the top of the page.

I will do my best to add grades in quickly, however you may need to give me a day or two before they are entered.  The Fourth grade teachers meet regularly to ensure that we are teaching the same material and we do grade similarly, however we differ slightly in our methods.  If there is a misprint in the Grade Book, please give me some time and I am sure I will find it before report cards are printed.

Math

We are studying  chapter 6 on Multiplication.  The topics included in this chapter are:

  • Multiples of 10, 100 and 1,000
  • Estimating products
  • Model multiplication by one-digit numbers
  • multiply two-digit numbers by one-digit numbers
  • problem solving
  • multiplying three-digit numbers by one-digit numbers
  • Review for test

Reading and Writing

Currently, we are focusing on 2 reading comprehension strategies: questioning and visualizing.

In writing, students are living a "writerly life" and have started to add entries into their Writer's Notebooks.  These should stay in the ziploc bags when they are not writing in them.  Students will be asked to complete a certain number of entries each Monday.  They can always choose to do more.  We will begin the genre study of memoir.  We will learn the crafts of authors and writers and apply them into our own memoirs.

We continue to add to our memoirs and will be working on specific characteristics before we draft.

Social Studies

We have begun to study Northeastern Woodland Native Americans.  We will be exploring in great detail a few of the tribes, especially the Iroquois tribe.  We will be studying:

  • the location of the different Native Americans in New York
  • longhouses
  • the roles of the women, men and children
  • clothing
  • hunting
  • clans, tribes
  • similarities and differences between Iroquois and Algonkian Indians
  • storytelling
  • legends

Our Iroquois Confederacy meeting is scheduled for early December.

Science

We have completed our unit on Sun, Moon and Earth.  Now, we have started to investigate the human body and some of the systems.  These systems include:

  • The Skeletal System
  • The Digestive System
  • The Circulatory System
  • The Respiratory System
  • The Excretory System

Then we will study plant systems and how they compare to Human Body Systems.

Homework

The homework policy for fourth grade is that any daily assignment (math sheet or spelling sheet) should only take about 20 minutes to complete.  If it is taking your child longer than 20 minutes and they truly have tried and stay focused during it, please sign the top of the paper and your child will receive full credit.

The weekly reading is something that will take longer than 20 minutes and should be completed with a parent and child together, with the child writing the answers.  This is a chance to discuss the text with your child.  Allow them to show you how smart they are when reading.  It does require a parent signature somewhere on the weekly reading.
