Welcome Fall! Upcoming Events: 11/10 - Emergency "Go Home" Drill - Students will be dismissed about 15 minutes early from school. 11/10 - NO SCHOOL - Veteran's Day 11/13 - End of the Marking Period 11/19 - First 1/2 Day for Parent Conferences 11/25 - 29th - Thanksgiving Recess 12/8 - Second 1/2 Day for Parent Conferences Parent Portal You are now able to view your child's grades online using the link, username and password that was handed out to you at Open House. Please use this as a tool to check assignments, check your child's progress and missing assignments. If your child has a score of "1" or it is marked "completed" with a green check that means that is was a REDO and it was handed back to your child to fix and then they must hand it back in to raise their grade. All papers that are redos are marked with an "R" at the top of the page. I will do my best to add grades in quickly, however you may need to give me a day or two before they are entered. The Fourth grade teachers meet regularly to ensure that we are teaching the same material and we do grade similarly, however we differ slightly in our methods. If there is a misprint in the Grade Book, please give me some time and I am sure I will find it before report cards are printed. Math Now, we are learning about algebra on chapter 5. These topics include: - order of operations
- words into expressions
- evaluating expressions
- comparing expressions
- variations and equations
- problem solving
- function tables
- Review of algebra
Reading and Writing We have begun to live a writerly life. We are currently "gathering around the world" which means we are gathering different entries in our Writer's Notebooks. There is a list of topic ideas in their WN to help your child write about something if they are ever stuck. We will begin our memoir unit as we have gathered topic ideas. Soon, we will narrow our focus into one "seed idea" and begin to work toward our draft. Social Studies We have begun our unit of study on Native Americans of New York. We will focus on their homes, resources used, what life was like, clans, hunting and planting and much more. Science Currently, we are studying the Sun, Moon and Earth unit. We are focusing on what the conditions are on the moon and learning about the characteristics of the sun. Homework The homework policy for fourth grade is that any daily assignment (math sheet or spelling sheet) should only take about 20 minutes to complete. If it is taking your child longer than 20 minutes and they truly have tried and stay focused during it, please sign the top of the paper and your child will receive full credit. The weekly reading is something that will take longer than 20 minutes and should be completed with a parent and child together, with the child writing the answers. This is a chance to discuss the text with your child. Allow them to show you how smart they are when reading. It does require a parent signature somewhere on the weekly reading.
