Parent Portal

You are now able to view your child's grades online using the link, username and password that was handed out to you at Open House.  Please use this as a tool to check assignments, check your child's progress and missing assignments.  If your child has a score of "1" or it is marked "completed" with a green check that means that is was a REDO and it was handed back to your child to fix and then they must hand it back in to raise their grade.  All papers that are redos are marked with an "R" at the top of the page.

I will do my best to add grades in quickly, however you may need to give me a day or two before they are entered.  The Fourth grade teachers meet regularly to ensure that we are teaching the same material and we do grade similarly, however we differ slightly in our methods.  If there is a misprint in the Grade Book, please give me some time and I am sure I will find it before report cards are printed.

Math

We are learning elapsed time and word problems with time.

Reading and Writing

We are currently studing our short story unit in Writing Workshop and creating our anthologies in our Bare Books.

In reading, we have split into literature circles.  Your child should be bringing this book to school and back home every day.  They will also be given a role to be for that assigned chapter(s), such as Literary Luminary, Discussion Director, Word Wizard, Passage Picker, and Illustrator.

Social Studies

We are currently studying the American Revolution.

Science

Currently, we are studying and reviewing for the New York State Science Test which will take place on May 5th and 6th.  It will include a hands-on manipulative test and a written test.  Your child should continue to study their flashcard ring at home and practice the powerpoint games on the CD.  The CD and flashcard ring will need to be returned on May 6th.

Homework

The homework policy for fourth grade is that any daily assignment (math sheet or spelling sheet) should only take about 20 minutes to complete.  If it is taking your child longer than 20 minutes and they truly have tried and stay focused during it, please sign the top of the paper and your child will receive full credit.

The weekly reading is something that will take longer than 20 minutes and should be completed with a parent and child together, with the child writing the answers.  This is a chance to discuss the text with your child.  Allow them to show you how smart they are when reading.  It does require a parent signature somewhere on the weekly reading.
