 Our  Daily Routine

Please refer to the Specials schedule link to see what our daily specials will be.

Arrival- Sharpen pencils, complete "welcome work" at seat.

After announcements, we will meet in the front of the room for morning meeting. Here we will greet each other, take attendance and lunch count, play a quick warm up game and do some calendar work.

Reading workshop will begin after morning meeting. Reading workshop is a way of structuring the reading time so that every child is engaged in a meaningful literacy activity. Word study/phonics will be taught side by side with comprehension skills. We will spend the first few weeks learning the behaviors of the reading workshop. I will also be spending time observing the students to find out what your child'strengths and needs are as a reader.

Our daily reading workshop will include;

  • listening to a story
  • whole group mini lesson
  • small group instruction
  • independent reading
  • buddy reading
  • independent word study
  • writing
  • gathering back together to share ideas, book suggestions, and writing activities.

Math class will follow a similar "workshop" model in which we will have a whole group lesson, individual/small group instruction,  and independent work with centers and games.

Science will be every other day. We will focus on hands on activities and our sessions will be inquiry based. This means that the students will ask questions about the topic at hand and will find ways to answer those questions. We will learn about researching by using books, dvd's, streaming videos and the internet.

Social Studies will be held every other day. We will begin with a unit about families and will also be using "A Trip Around the World" program to learn about other countries. We might do a craft, or make a snack. or learn a few words in the studied country's language.

We will do a lesson each day from our religion workbooks. Religion tests will be given as "take home" tests for homework.

Spelling test will begin in October. Your child will bring home a list of words every Friday. A pretest will be given the following Monday and a test will be given on Friday. Words will be posted on this site and will also be written in your child's agenda,

Homework will be given aprox. twice a week. Homework will be written in your child's agenda and posted on this site. Any homework papers will be found in the "return" pocket of your child's folder.
