Career and Job Exploration

Career exploration is a part of many activities and classes in the middle school and high school. Students are encouraged to explore the types of careers available to them and the types that might suit their personality. We have included some useful links to career exploration and college exploration. Students are encouraged to use these resources in their personal research and for class research. - Every student should leave high school with a ticket to the future. We must encourage students to take rigorous high school courses, monitor their academic progress, make timely interventions, and communicate early and often how well they are progressing toward their goals.

The Workplace Learning Connection The Workplace Learning Connection works with students to provide opportunities for job shadows and internships. Job Shadows Juniors and Seniors are able to participate in a one day job shadow in an industry of their choice. Applications for job shadows are distributed during a Workplace Learning Connection presentation in August each year. Click on the link above for more job shadow information. Internships Internships are available for credit. Juniors and Seniors are able to participate at an internship in a selected industry. It is recommended to wait until your senior year due to more schedule flexibility. Internships are available at a number of places in Benton, Linn and surrounding counties. ***Current part-time jobs held by students DO NOT qualify for internship credit. Iowa Workforce Development Website with Iowa specific career information. Salary, wages, education and job outlook information is available. Occupational Outlook Handbook This is a website managed by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. Job information of 1000s of careers is available here. information is based upon national data. Occupational Outlook Handbook for Kids This is a smaller version of the Occupational Outlook Handbook. It provides information for a limited number of careers organized by school subject. CareerNet Search America's CareerNet for information on many careers. Multiple searches available. Career Overview Search by industry, location, or job choice. Presents information in an different way from other engines by stating information in a more narrative way. O*Net Career resource for information on many careers. Multiple searches available.
