In Classical Athens, the Athenaeum was a gathering area where scholars, poets, and playwrights came to create and to read aloud their works, and where teachers came to instruct eager students.
Later, the Roman Emperor Hadrian founded a school by the same name in Rome. Today, the word has come to mean a literary or scientific association and building housing a library, periodicals, newspapers, and areas for quiet individual and public group study.
The John Paul II Athenaeum is a state of the art, wireless multimedia center combining a library with computer and technology facilities. This center anchors student academic research and provides a public access center for our larger community to use.
