About the Library

About the Library

Students in Pre-kindergarten, Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 8 are scheduled to visit the library once per week.  Students in Kindergarten and Grade 6 visit the library twice each week.  In addition to their regularly scheduled classes, students are welcome to use the library when research for a special project is necessary.

In Pre-kindergarten stories are read each week accompanied by a small craft project.  Students are also allowed to look through books of their choice.

Kindergarten through Grade 2 learn the proper care of library materials, library etiquette, location of materials in the library, and how to sign out a book.  The concepts of title, author, illustrator, fiction, non-fiction, call number, title page, copyright, place of publication, and dedication page are taught.  The main character, beginning, middle, and end of a story are also taught.

Grades 3 and 4 learn and apply the concepts taught in previous grades as well as the concepts of table of contents, and index. They are taught how to use an atlas and the encyclopedia.  Students are also taught the Dewey Decimal system and how to use the card catalog.

Concepts learned in previous grades, as well as the concepts of bibliographies, biographies, and autobiographies are re-enforced in Grades 5 and 6. They are also taught how to use an almanac.

They may, on occasion, be assigned a small research project.

In Grades 7 and 8 students work on research projects assigned by their teachers.   The library is used for research and work on the various assignments given.

Guest speakers are also invited to the library to enhance the curriculum being taught to the students.

The lending of books is also an important part of library services.  Students are allowed to borrow books from the library each week.

The library also hosts an annual book fair to provide the students with the opportunity to buy high quality books for their reading enjoyment.
