Be Prepared... Science Fair is Rapidly Approaching
Students, I am so excited for you, because you are about to enter the incredible adventure of science fair. This is a long-term project that will enable you to take a problem or question, of your choosing, and based on your hypothesis develop a test of its validity based on experimentation. Then you will have the opportunity to display the results of your projects for the entire school. And if that is not enough your projects will be judged by science professionals, and the best projects will be rewarded.
During the project, there will be several checkpoints to make sure you are progressing at a timely manner. This event requires planning and execution to be successful. It is almost impossible to wait until the last minute and produce a satisfactory product. There will be at least five checkpoints each worth a lab grade. Completion of the project on time will count as a major test grade. Participation in the science fair will count as a major test grade. And the judges’ scores will count as a major test grade. So hopefully you can see that this is a big deal and will require your attention.
The whole process starts with an idea, question, or problem that you develop a hypothesis for. From there you develop a way to test your hypothesis. Then you analyze the data and then report your findings. In other words you use the scientific method. My website has several resources under the “science fair” section to help you get started. One more thing, this is an outside project, so most of your work will be done outside of class. You may work individually or work with a partner who is in your class.
I wish you the best of luck and good science. I cannot wait to see what your incredible minds and talents will produce.
Mr. Schwab
