Who is Mrs. Barteld and why lemonade?
Mrs. Barteld and family I am in my sixth year of teaching, my fifth at Bo. I am in the expanding teacher population known as a “late career changers.” My undergraduate degree in is Marketing and I am currently pursuing a masters degree in educational instruction. I was a quotation coordinator in the marketing department for industrial cables at Pirelli Cable in Elkton when the department was moved to Union, NJ in 1981. While living in New Jersey I met and married my husband. After beginning our family I took a 21 year sabbatical from paid employment to be a “stay-at-home” Mom. (Although, if you ask my children they will say that there wasn’t much staying at home on my part.) During that time I was active in many church committees and volunteer organizations. I am most proud of my contributions to the Hyacinth Foundation New Jersey AIDS speakers bureau, serving as the Philanthropy Distribution Chairwoman for the American Women’s Association of Vienna, Austria during the Bosnian crisis and serving as the President of the American Women’s Association of Dubai, UAE at the time of the events of September 11, 2001. My husband’s job has led us on a life’s adventure of living on three different continents and in three different states. His last transfer opened the opportunity to return to my roots in Chesapeake City and to full-time employment for me. After doing some substitute teaching I decided to re-enter the work force as an educator rather than returning to the business world. I returned to college to acquire the extra credits in education necessary to become certified and have passed all necessary tests to be considered “highly qualified.” My philosophy of education is to teach the “whole child.” By that I mean it is important to incorporate life skills, soft skills and relevant skills into each subject I teach. I think the diverse background that I bring to the classroom helps me do that. Why Lemonade? I began my teaching career at North East High School. Principal Terry Stammler (who by the way was my principal when I graduated from Bo Manor) said on our first day that there would be a lot of lemons coming our way and that he expected us to make lemonade. As the school year progressed I learned that he had predicted accurately. As a visual learner I needed a reminder to keep making lemonade, hence the birth of Mrs. Barteld’s lemonade stand. Since its first appearance the stand has become more than just a visual reminder to make the best of otherwise difficult situations; it serves as a reminder of what is very often a student’s first business experience. My saying now is, “When life hands you lemons make lemonade and become an entrepreneur.” In addition to being a business icon, the stand apparently has assumed an additional function as a front hall GPS device. Who knew?
