School Site Enrichment Materials

We now are able to offer school sites enrichment materials for check-out. The materials are designed to support enrichment sessions held at a school campus. At some school sites, parent groups have sponsored an after-school activity, while at other sites teachers have conducted occasional lunch sessions, using parent help. As the GATE site representative, please discuss preferences and options with your principal. Will be adding to this list as the year progresses.

To check-out the any of the material below, please contact Margaret Esfahani via email (mesfahani@tusd.org). In your email, indicate the school site you are representing, the materials needed, and the dates you will be using the materials. For purposes of fairness, we will limit the time material can be reserved to two weeks. Materials need to be picked-up and returned to the Educational Materials Building located at 2336 Plaza del Amo, directly across the street from the District offices.

Skyrail Suspension Marble Run Construction Set

Students can construct a marble run that is 5 feet wide and 3 feet tall, with adjustable suspension cables to easily raise or lower the tracks. The challenge is designing a system to gain maximum speed. It is suggested students work in teams of two or three. (physics and math involved)

10

RC Robot

This is a kit of easy-to assemble electrical circuits. Students can make 20 different projects, including a remote-controlled rover with responsive left/right and forward/backward motion. It is suggested students work in pairs. (engineering and science involved)

10

Building Models through Physics

This kit allows students to make a wide assortment (36 different projects are possible)of projects, including a wind power generator,  centrifuge, all-terrain vehicle, crane, Mars robot, and a pendulum clock. The projects demonstrate fundamental laws of physics such as gravity, force and acceleration. It is suggested students work in pairs. (physics and engineering involved)

Build Bridges to Engineering Understanding

Students can explore seven key bridge types with this set - the arch, beam, truss, cable-stayed, cantilever, bascule, and suspension. It is suggested students work in pairs. (engineering and math involved)

10

Motorized Marble Elevator

As they keep marbles on a wire track, students test and adjust their assumptions of physics. It is suggested students work in teams of two or three. (physics and engineering involved)

10

Generate Electricity with Wind Power

Wind is one of the most promising sources of clean, renewable energy today. Students can learn the physics behind the technology by building a wind turbine complete with electric generator, rotors and wind speed indicator. It is suggested students work in pairs. (physics and environmental science involved)

Games to Strain the Brain

Last year, our Euro-game nights were very successful. Make your own game sessions by selecting an assortment of games from the list below.

  • Mancala – classic game that uses complex strategies to capture stones
  • Stacking and Building game – construction game that demands balance, nerve, and calculated risk
  • Blocking Car Puzzle – shift the blocking cars out of the way until you escape the gridlock
  • Sweet Logic Puzzle Challenge – this brain twisting logic puzzle requires students to assemble boxes of chocolates using deduction skills to find the correct combinations
  • No Stress Chess – draw a card and place the corresponding piece on the board (teaches moves and powers of each piece)
  • Cloud: The Daring Game of Ups and Downs – a quick game that uses both strategy and chance
  • Trans Europa – students must work together to build a vast railroad network across all of Europe
  • Trans America – students must work together to build a vast railroad network across all of America
  • For Sale – a game that uses money and real estate (our most popular game at Euro-game night)
  • Chess/checkers combination sets
  • Ubongo Extreme – using  puzzle cards and tokens,  players race to cover white hexes with colored pieces that fit exactly  (difficult and fun at the same time)
  • Ave Caesar – up to six charioteers compete in Circus Maximus to determine who is the greatest driver in all of Rome
