Information detailing available academic competitions will be posted on this link. Some competitions can be entered as individual students, with parent sponsorship. Other competitions require school teams or groups. Regardless of entry configurations and requirements, parents should discuss competitions with their school administrators. Torrance Unified School District does not endorse any of the competitions posted, but are merely providing information as a public service. The National Geographic Spelling Bee registration must be turned in by October 15, 2009. Each school site must have a site competition involving at least six students, with the winner moving on to the next level of competition. Although it might be late for the official deadline, perhaps GATE students could establish a team and practice for next year. From the Exploravision website comes the following statement: “Now in its 18th year, ExploraVision is a science competition that encourages K-12 students of all interest, skill and ability levels to create and explore a vision of future technology by combining their imaginations with the tools of science. All inventions and innovations result from creative thinking and problem solving. That's what ExploraVision is all about.” This competition requires no entry free and is sponsored by Toshiba and the National Science Teachers Association.
