Portrait of Mrs. Britt by Annie, grade 2

Janet Clements Britt

It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.

                                                                                                                              Albert Einstein

JANET CLEMENTS BRITT is a third generation teacher, following in the footsteps of her mother and her grandmother.  This will be her 18th year teaching and sharing her passion for art with first through fourth graders and her love of Humanities with third grade students.  She motivates and inspires her students to tap into their innate creativity and to grow in self awareness as they express themselves freely.  Using a variety of quality media, she provides a warm, encouraging environment in which each young artist can grow.  Janet is very pleased to to be team teaching with Neisja Yenawine this year. Together, they plan stimulating lessons and inspire quality art with the 1st and 2nd grade students.  Mrs. "Y"'s energy, her sense of humor and her keen observant eye, is a gift she shares with the students and Mrs. Britt as well.

Janet strives to stay connected to the community and stretch herself as an artist as well.  Her passions include photography and painting in oils.  Her most recent art events include:

  • 2004 Gallopalooza Horse Commission - Gallopalooza was a public art event that involved 223 life size horses painted by local artists.  Janet's horse, Lil E. Tee was painted "just for kids" as a giant rocking horse and was signed by jockey Pat Day.  A generous St. Francis family bought the horse at an auction in October, 2004 and donated it to our school campus!
  • 2004 Dinnerworks Award from the Louisville Visual Arts Association, a collaborative effort with fellow teachers/artists Nita Duechle and Neisja Yenawine.
  • 2006 Participation in the Oldham County Artist Tour.  Her oil paintings of "nests" were inspired by her youngest daughters flight to college, and away from the nest.
  • 2006 Bittners Art Show with artists/friends Neisja Yenawine and Nita Duechle, a friday gallery hop event
  • 2008 oil paintings currently for sale at Sister Dragonfly Gallery

Mrs. Britt holds a Bachelor of Arts from Hanover College and a Master of Arts Therapy from the University of Louisville. She and husband, Greg, share their home with his mother, Shannon, who is a retired teacher as well.  Her daughter Kate lives and works in Colorado and Emmy is a college student. Both are St. Francis alumni!

The highlight of Janet's summer of 2008, was her very first visit to London, England to visit her friend and former colleague, Macarena Dearie.  This exciting adventure was made possible by an offer to exchange a plane ticket for a large painting for Sophia's room. The experience was priceless!
