November 2011
Here's what we did in Social Studies during the month of October.

7th grade:
  • We started November discussing the growth of the 13 American colonies.
  • We explored the issue of slavery in the colonies and learned about the Middle Passage.
  • We discussed the growing tensions between the colonists and the Native Americans that eventually led to King Philip's War.
  • We finished the month discussing the French and Indian War and how its aftermath led to new stricter policies that began to foster the anger of the colonies towards their King.
8th grade:
  • We began November talking about the rising tensions in Europe before World War I. 
  • We discussed the MAIN causes of WWI (Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, Nationalism.
  • We looked at the spark/immediate cause that triggered the World War as well as the events that eventually drew the United States into the war.
  • We finished the month discussing World War I and its aftermath (Treaty of Versailles, League of Nations, Wilson's Fourteen Points)

October 2011
Here's what we did in Social Studies during the month of October.

7th grade:
  • We started October learning about European explorers. 
    • Columbus, de Gama, Magellan, Balboa, etc)
  • We finished the month talking about the early attempts at colonization in North America.
    • Roanoke (The Lost Colony), Jamestown, Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth.
8th grade:
  • We began October talking about the Gilded Age and moved on to the Progressive Era.
  • We learned about various reformers who tried to fix many of the social, economic, and political problems.

September 2011
Here's what we did in Social Studies during the month of September.

7th grade:
  • We explored Pre-Columbian America. What did America look like before European explorers came? Who lived here? How did they live?, etc.
  • We also learned about the Native Americans of the East Coast US, Great Plains, Northwest Coast, as well as the Southwest US.
8th grade:
  • After a quick review of some of the important things we discussed last year we started 8th grade learning about the growth of Industrial America.
  • We discussed new technologies and inventions and how they impacted life in the USA.
  • We also learned about immigration and the role that the newly arrived immigrants played in building America.
    • The 8th graders also got to play the role of an immigrant coming into America through Ellis Island in a role-playing activity to learn about the immigration process.
