FMS RandomTimes! Go to the website to see our school newspaper - https://sites.google.com/site/thefmsrandomtimes/. The third edition of our school's online newspaper will be live on February 29. Any student can become a "freelance reporter." Just email your article, photo, or scanned copy of artwork (see the categories below) to the editors at: fmsrandomtimes@gmail.com. We need submissions in the following categories: - School News, Team News, Student News, FMS and the World - all about the FMS student experience
- Sports News from FMS games, athletic contests, kid athletes, etc.
- Entertainment: Movie, music, and book reviews
- For Kids, By Kids: Original creations that include poetry, short stories, art, or cartoons
- Opinion: Letters to the editors, and letters requesting advice to be answered by our own advice columnist, "Dear Flash"
- Photographs: Taken by FMS students of events or just for fun
Could YOU answer this question? "Wolof is widely spoken in Dakar and other cities throughout which West African country?" Our students did an amazing job with questions like this at our Geography Bee on Friday. Congratulations to Sean Quinn, our school champion. Sean will now take a multiple-choice test which will be sent to the National Geographic Society for assessment to see if he will be invited to the State Bee in March. Congratulations also goes out to Sean Hourihan, our second place winner; and Jeremy Collison, who took third place. Other students who became top-ten finalists included Michael Zhu, Arnav Kannan, Emily Borges, Aaron Johnson, Angus Armstrong, Joseph Petitti, and Matt Romano. The rest of our preliminary round competitors included Suraj Suresh, Winsor Jewell, Aezat Ullah, Zach Poland, Theo Karavolas, Andrew Leicht, Adam Kronick, Gianluca Alonzi, John Bonanno, Salil Chaudhry, Luciano Alonzi, Kevin Waltz, Sagar Kumar, and Patrick Henning. Rafi Nizam, Thomas Jambunathan, Suraj Suresh, and Massoud Sharif, and Bill Dong represented our school at the Regional Bee at Proctor's on February 7th. Congratulations to Massoud Sharif, who became the regional champion and will now go on to the national finals in Washington D.C. in June. This is the third year that FMS has had a student go to the national level of this competition. We are very proud of the achievement of all of our spellers. Congratulations to our Math Counts team and alternate team members. Our team members who will represent our school at the regional contest in February include: Bill Dong, Will Wang, Michael Zhu, and Jeremy Collison. Our alternate team members are: Eric Pasquini, Edward Yu, Mohona Sengupta, and Catherine Seita. The team came in FIRST PLACE out of 19 schools at the regional competition on February 4. All four of the team members also individually scored in the top 12 out of 135 students and 19 schools. Bill Dong ranked 2nd, Will Wang 5th, Michael Zhu 10th, and Jeremy Collison 11th. During the unofficial Countdown Round, which is done as an extra challenge at the end of the competition, both Bill and Will were in the top four of the 12 students. We can also be proud of our alternates - Eric Pasquini, Edward Yu, Mohona Sengupta and Catherine Seita. Edward Yu scored 18th and will be the alternate who will go with the team to the State contest, which will be held at RPI on March 17. Eric Pasquini also came in 25th out of 135 students. Ms. Vangelis and Mrs. Escobar were the coaches. The FMS debate tournament concluded on February 6. 40 students participated in rounds arguing the resolution: Resolved, the US government should encourage the building of new nuclear power plants. Congratulations to the following students: First place: Caroline Murphy and Lily Pickett Second place: Amit Kannan and Albert Zhong Third place: Edward Yu and Priyan Pathirana Tie for fourth: Michael Zhu and Bill Dong; Mohona Sengupta and Sean Quinn In addition, the following students won preliminary rounds: Mallory Trainor, Ella Davidson, Nissan Lyubarov, Andrew Lin, Mia Ermolenko, Febronia Mansour, Lauren Casselle, Emily Neimeyer, Will Wang, Salil Chaudhry. Thanks to all of the volunteer judges - could not have made the tournament happen without them! - Mrs. Tubbs, Mrs. Lawlor, Mrs. Kelly, Mr. Rausch, Mrs. Wlazlo, Mr. McGreevy, Mr. Kavanaugh, Mr. Fry, Mrs. Dicker, and parents Stephen Gonick, Karen Covert-Jones, Elizabeth Goldstein, Steven Davidson, and Theresa Standish-Kuon. The class will now begin preparation of a mock trial on freedom of the press.
