2010-2011 Vocabulary Program

Please visit Quizlet.com and search for "Colleyville Heritage." Look for hits under "Groups" (usually on the right side of the page)--ignore hits under "Sets."

There should be at least four groups:

  1. Colleyville Heritage Freshmen Vocab Sets
  2. Colleyville Heritage Sophomore Vocab Sets
  3. Colleyville Heritage Junior Vocab Sets
  4. Colleyville Heritage AP Language Terms

All groups are password protected. The password is "panthers." (Note: It may be case-sensitive: Capitalize the "P" if it doesn't work.)

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

This program is designed to expand student vocabulary by teaching word deconstruction skills. At the same time, the program serves as an SAT or ACT preparation tool.

Three years of vocabulary study lists are provided. Each year contains 25 word sets containing 25 words or word parts. All words have been taken from sundry SAT or ACT preparation guides. The word parts have been selected based on their frequency of use, with the more common parts appearing in the earlier lists.

Word Parts allow students to predict the meaning of words never seen before. For example: Somniferous. If students know that SOMN means "sleep," and that FER means "carry," then they might predict the word's meaning: Sleep-inducing, or dull. Knowing the most common word parts allows students to figure out the meaning of words without dictionaries--a most helpful skill on standardized tests.

The program labels groups by class (freshmen, sophomore, and junior); however, the lists can be studied at any age. The years are intended to build on each other. In other words, juniors should be expected to know all the words and word parts from the freshmen and sophomore lists.

Within each group, word sets should be studied in numerical sequence. Each group begins with sets of word parts, followed by sets with words. The words all contain at least one word part that appeared in a previous list. In this way, word parts are reinforced by words, and the words are more easily remembered by using the word parts.

Word sets appear in two different forms: Analytical and Nude. The analytical version gives the word followed by an analysis of the word parts contained within that word. The word part analysis is designed to trigger recognition of the word's meaning. In the "NUDE" sets, the word part analysis is removed, as students are expected to recognize them on their own. Nude Sets will be used for testing. Students should begin studying the words in analytical form and then transition to nude form.

TESTING

Most tests given in class will be through Quizlet.com. Your teacher will generate tests that can be taken by Scantron. Usually, tests will be given in the computer lab. Word Parts and Words will always be separated on these tests. Take practice tests using the same format that your teacher will use.

Remember: Tests will be cumulative. All sets build. By the end of the year, tests will be given on ALL words (Nude) and ALL word parts. Use the "Combine with other Sets" feature to practice. Repetition is the key to memory.

IMPORTANT: Under the blue boxes, please find "Combine with Other Sets." By following this link, multiple sets can be studied at the same time.

PRACTICE TESTS: Using the "Combine with Other Sets" feature, create practice tests for multiple sets. Do NOT mix word and word part sets for test creation, as the quiz generator cannot differentiate the different types of words.
