National Honor Society Summer Hours
All NHS members must complete 40 hours of community service. A maximum of 15 hours can be counted for the summer (5/1/10 to 9/1/10). The remaining hours will be completed through NHS-sponsored service activities (and other approved outings) during the school year.
Definition of "Community Service": Offering your time and abilities to benefit the local community, including (but not limited to) schools, hospitals, parks & recreation, city events, and charitable organizations. Community service is unpaid. Furthermore, community service is by choice. (For example, if you are required by your debate coach to work a tournament, that service is by requirement, not by choice. If Teen Court orders that you must perform 40 community service hours, then those hours are by order and requirement and not by choice.)
Service organizations include but are not limited to the following: Baylor Hospital, Grace, The Heritage Foundation, National Charity League, Habitat for Humanity, Grapevine Public Library, Project Graduation, teen court, and religious institutions. (Note: Religious instruction does NOT count towards service hours.) All organizations must qualify for Section 501 (c) 3 status. Other service organizations should be cleared through Mr. Wevodau.
Below, please find a form to fill out to record your hours. The completed form should be emailed to NHS President Kamran Ali (kamrandali@yahoo.com). Hours may also be submitted during the first two weeks of school.
