Rhetorical Analysis: Film Reviews

Movie critics can help make or break a film.

Task: You will be given film reviews written by three different critics for the same film. For each film, first compile the rhetorical strategies used by the critic to either persuade or dissuade you from seeing the film. Next, compose an extended paragraph explaining which review you found most influential—and why. Not all critics are the same. Some are trusted more than others. Why did one review stand out in your mind as compared to the others?

Come to class prepared to share and discuss your findings.

Rhetorical Strategies: Film Reviews, Part II.

Your class will be shown a long forgotten short film. Your teacher has done his best to find an absolutely awful, terrible production that should be lost to history. Your task will be to write a film review that encourages people to see the film. You will need to lie, manipulate, and deceive. Your ability to effectively use rhetorical strategies will be put to the test.

Several classes will be shown different films. Peers in other classes –who have not seen your film—will assess whose review most inspired them to see the film.
