Internet Scams Internet Scams

"Internet scams can affect everyone who uses the Internet, regardless of whether that use includes web browsing, e-mail, or online shopping.  Generally, scams occur in order to obtain a person's private credentials (login/password) or financial information.  Most people who have e-mail have seen some type of scam, as spam is often an easy and efficient way to propagate these scams.  Pop-up ads present another way that scams are commonly carried out on the Internet.  Regardless of the way in which the scam reaches the user, they will always be required to (at some point) enter personal or financial information disguised as a product order form or verification screen.  This information will then be routed to the person committing the scam - either to be used immediately or sold off to another party."

One common type of scam that occurs is phishing.  The definition of phishing according to about.com’s Computer and Technology webpage is 'a scam in which the attacker sends an email purporting to be from a valid financial or eCommerce provider.'  The email will then route that person to a website in which it will steal that person’s information if it is entered."

YOUR TASK: Internet scams use classic rhetorical strategies. The scammers create letters, ads, or other materials that they believe will appeal to certain users.  The materials use diverse means to persuade the user to give information that they shouldn’t.

Using Internet search engines, find and locate an Internet scam. Print the scam as written. On a separate page, please write and answer the following questions:

1. Audience: Who seems to be the scammers intended target audience? How do you know?

2. Purpose/Intent: What are the scammers trying to obtain or gather? Why?

3. Rhetorical Strategies: List and briefly explain all strategies used by the scammers to persuade the targets to give them what they want. (Remember the three rhetorical modes: reason, emotion, and credibility.) Do the scammers use fallacious reasoning? emotional manipulation? Do they try to make themselves look or sound  credible?

4. Who might fall prey to this scam? Why?

Please bring all materials to class on the day assigned.
