Life Skills Class

Within the Life Skills Class we hope to make your child's learning experiences fun and exciting and instill a love of learning that will last throughout your child's lifetime. Expect to see smiling faces and view learning taking place using a variety of methods and strategies. 

There is a high focus on daily independence in academic skills, functional skills, and daily self-help skills. There is also a strong focus on language development skills. Below is a summary of skills covered throughout our daily routine.

Morning circle- concepts include calendar skills of day, date, year, days of the week, months of the year, seasons, weather and weather related voabulary. We also work on first/last name identification and spelling of. We discuss time events that take place throughout the day, student sharing/show and tell activites, music and movement activities, and singing activities.

Reading- concepts include letter, letter sound recognition, building a sight and functional vocabulary, sequencing concepts, retelling skills, independent reading of material, comprehension skills, and following verbal and written directions. We use Reading Mastery and Edmark programs.

Written language-concepts include tracing letters, numbers, and shapes, forming letters and numbers independently with and without visuals, copying from given materials and writing independently. We also work on correct letter formation, spacing and writing within boundaries. We use the Handwriting Without Tears program.

Math- concepts include rote counting, number recognition, identification, basic math concepts of one to one correspondence, positional concepts, simple addition and subtraction facts, shape identification, coin identification and value, and telling time. We use the Harcourt Math curriculum and also Touch Math.

Motor skill-concepts include coloring, cutting, and pasting skills. We use a variety of manipulatives such as pegs, blocks, puzzles, games, etc., to the use of CD players and computers. Various textures are provided. Gross motor skills of eye-hand coordination skills, music and movement activities, following game directions and rules, and participating appropriately in group activities. We also work on building independence in moving around the overall school environment.

Communication/Social and Behavioral skills emphasize the students ability to verbally express their wants and needs, positive and appropriate interaction skills with peers/adults, and cooperative learning skills. We use both concrete and abstract concepts within their daily activities. We work on building the students ability to work with minimal assistance and or independently. We also work on developing the students ability to internalize and demonstrate acceptable social manners and behavior.

Community Based Instruction activites include recognition of symbols/signs and their relevance to the environment. Leisure and recreational activities that can become life long activities for adulthood.
