Assignment the World is a 15 minute children's news program that is broadcast on WXXI. Each Friday in social studies class, we will watch Assignment the World. It is an excellent program which conveys news event from around the world, yet keeps the information at an age appropriate level.
During each broadcast, there will be a segment called "Clues in the News." These are clues to news event that will occur in the coming week. "Clues in the News" will be a homework assignment each week, due the following Wednesday at the beginning of class. This assignment may include finding locations using latitude and longitude, unscrambling letters, filling in the blanks, or even looking up famous people or groups on the internet. I do expect the students to make an effort to find the answers. Watching the news, looking through the newspaper, and even reading news stories online are great ways to keep students informed about the world around them.
The day before the "Clues in the News" are due, I will give all of the students "hints" to help them figure out the answers. Most of the time, students are able to figure out the answers at that time. I do encourage students to write down my hints and discuss them at home if they need further help. If your family is still stumped, please write me a note and explain the situation. This activity is meant to be a fun way to broaden a student's awareness of world events. It is not meant to torture St. Rita students (and their families).
