An Overview of a Reading Workshop The best way to become a better reader is to read each and every day. So,during Reading Workshop in our classroom, students have time each day to practice, practice, practice! Reading Workshop in our classroom consists of the following: a daily focus mini-lesson, independent reading with individual reading conferences, and a "sharing what we learned" session. In the beginning of the year, students are carefully taught how to choose a "just-right" book to read. Students read independently and sometimes with a buddy. In addition, once a day we have Word Study time. This is when we focus on a particular phonics skill, spelling strategy or grammar rule. This is done with the whole group. As the year progresses, I will highlight skills, strategies and charts that we have used and learned. These will be good conversation starters for you at home to talk about your child's daily reading in school. You will also get to see some of your children in action during Reading Workshop.
