Whats Happening in 229

This week we will review silent k and silent w.  Our grammar skill is plural nouns.  In Readers’ Workshop we talk about metacognition. This is thinking about our thinking when we read. We will pay close attention to what we understand and what we don’t understand in our reading. Children will be reading many nonfiction books about Native Americans and Thanksgiving. We have been talking about how we read fiction and nonfiction differently.

In Writer’s Workshop, we continue to study our mentor author, Angela Johnson. We will try to use some of her techniques in our writing: comeback lines, ellipses to build tension and stay in the moment, showing not telling our feelings (my heart was beating so fast!) and staying close to the heart of the story.

We have been working on some new strokes for cursive. This week we will start our first cursive lower case letters.

In math we will finish our work with probability and graphing. Skills include predicting outcomes, and using a graph to problems solve.

We have started our unit on Native Americans. This is going to be an exciting week! The children will practice some symbol writing and design a symbol for their new names. We will be playing some Native American games, sewing pouches and making Wampum beads. I will be reading a lot of Native American stories as well.

Did you hear that we collected over 500 drink pouches in our school last week?? We put them into groups of 10 and counted by tens. It was a messy job but the kids loved it. We will make updates on the morning announcements and Monday’s morning programs.

We have read over 25 postcards so far. Last week we learned about Gibraltar, New Jersey coast, North Carolina and New York City. We have started to talk about some geographical terms such as north, south, west and east.

Congratulations to our VIP:

Sean Keeler
