Social Studies
Our social studies curriculum is through Harcourt Brace-In fifth grade, Rose Hill Intermediate students will study a variety of topics. To begin the year, mapping is revisited and expanded. Students are responsible for knowing cardinal and intermediate directions, map elements, longitude and latitude, and be exposed to a variety of different types of maps.
With the aid of our textbook, students then begin to study early European exploration with a brief glimpse of explorers such as Leif Erikkson, Marco Polo, Vasco da Gama, Bartholomew Dias, and many more.
A large portion of the year is then spent on Colonial America and the forming of the United States of America. Emphasis is placed of the Declaration of Independence, the Revolutionary War, the US Constitution, and early government. Click on USA to visit Harcourt-Brace learning center.
