Elements of Media Syllabus Instructors: Dolores Tompkins, Paige Furr, Cassie Edmondson, Eva Kutscheid, John Hernandez Course Description/Objectives Elements of Media is a year long course that addresses: Visual literacy Problem solving through use of a variety of media Journaling Sketchbook work for idea development and investigation Technology as a creative tool Development of a single concept into a series Written analysis of artwork Course Requirements Students are required to keep an Elements of Media binder which will include: Class notes Journal entries Handouts describing techniques Vocabulary Idea development documentation – thinking process Evaluation/Critique/Self evaluation documents Students must have their binder in class everyday. In class storage is available. Students will attend two gallery exhibits (one on campus) and write a one page review using the outline/format provided in their binder. Students will participate in a culminating exhibit of ephemera, completed works of art, look books, process works, etc. Grading Policy 40% Classwork (journal/sketchbook, process work, investigations) 25% Test (completed projects, research, etc) 20% Project/Product (reviews, written work) 15% Six Weeks Test (written or artwork) Final Exam 50% Participation 50% Product This class is an investigation itself. Any assignments or goals may change to fit the needs and interests of the class. Each year will be tailored to the interests of the students.
