| Reading Response Notebook | The purpose of this notebook is to respond to literature that we have read in class. This helps to deepen the students’ comprehension of both fiction and content area reading selections. The responses in this notebook do not go through the writing process completely, so they are not always edited to be published. The students’ responses are an informal assessment of their understanding of various concepts. These are unedited works. |
| Poetry Notebook | The purpose of this notebook is to respond to various poems that we have read in class. These poems served as inspiration for many of our own poems. The students are expected to answer the questions on the inside covers of their notebooks. This was sometimes completed as a class, and sometimes it was completed independently. This notebook served as an informal assessment of the students’ comprehension of poetry on both the literal and inferential levels, as well as a place to draft their own independent poems. These assignments were not writing assessments. |
| Writer's Notebook | The purpose of this notebook is to write various pieces depending upon the writing genre and/or writing crafts we are working on. Students will sometimes publish these works. Some works will only make it through the drafting stage, while others will go through all stages of the writing process. |
| Word Study Notebook | The purpose of this notebook is for all of our word study work. Students will be learning various Word Study principles and then applying their knowledge through various activities. This is where they practice their spelling words and complete their buddy checks. |
| Mathematics Problem Solving Notebook | This is where we complete Problem of the Day each day. Students will work on many mathematical extension activities and problem solving assignments in this book. |
