DENNIS SANESKI WINS

NATIONAL FINANCIAL LITERACY CHALLENGE SCHOLARSHIP

Dennis Saneski, a senior at Columbia High School, has won a $2,500 college scholarship and a two-day, all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., from June 16 to June 18.   He is one of 10 regional winners from around the country.  In addition, the Business Education Department at Columbia High School will receive a $1,000 grant from the Charles Schwab Foundation in honor of Dennis Saneski’s achievement.

Students in Business Law, Financial Decision Making, and Career and Financial Management participated in the U.S. Department of the Treasury's inaugural National Financial Literacy Challenge, a new initiative recommended by the President's Advisory Council on Financial Literacy.  From April 28, 2008 to May 16, 2008, the Challenge, which tested high school students’ personal financial knowledge, was taken by more than 46,000 high school students.  Participants included students in rural areas, suburbs, and cities in this country, and in Department of Defense schools around the world.  The average student score was 56 percent. The results reinforce President Bush's belief that there is more work to be done to prepare our young people for the financial future that awaits them.

In addition, the following Columbia students scored in the top 25th percentile of the nation’s scores:  Samantha Allen, Louis Angelo, Anne Bruins, Andrew Carroll, Kaila Collins, Cameron Demers, Beth Evans, Melissa Harris, Ryan Hotaling, Steve Konieczny, Brian Lill, James Madden, Kyle Martin, Anthony McPhillips, Sean Stanley, and Michael Wing.

Dennis and his guests will be flown to Washington on June 16, where they will stay at the Hotel Palomar, a lovely hotel in the Dupont Circle area of DC.  The U. S. Department of the Treasury will provide an exciting day of activities and meetings with dignitaries on June 17, culminating in an Awards Banquet that evening.  On the morning of June 18, the students will be publicly recognized at a meeting of the President's Advisory Council on Financial Literacy, which is chaired by Chuck Schwab, founder and CEO of the Charles Schwab Corporation.

The Business Education Department at Columbia is very proud of Dennis and the other students on their accomplishments.
