READING WITH YOUR CHILD

  • Tell your child the title of the book
  • Beginning readers learn to point 'crisply' to each word as they read. Help your child remember to do this.  He may read familiar books without pointing.
  • When your child stops because he's unsure of a word - wait to give him time to figure it out.

Tricky Word Tips

  • Thinking about the story and looking at the picture.
  • Deciding what makes sense, sounds right, and looks right.
  • Going back and getting ready to say the first letter sound.
  • If all these fail give your child a choice of two possible words or tell  your child the word.

  1. Reread - When a tricky part is worked out, have your child read the whole sentence again.
  2. Ask a question about the story, or have your child tell his favorite part.
  3. Reading time should be short and sweet (5 - 15 minutes).
  4. Be excited when your child reads to you.   Your child is in the process of becoming a reader!
  5. Your help and positive attitude can make a difference!!!
