May 2012

April has gone by quickly. We are now going into the fourth week of the last marking period for this academic year. Remember the last leg of the race is always the hardest. To have a successful finish to this school year, end this academic year strong by staying focused in class and completing your homework on time. Soon each of you will be sixth graders!

The students returned from Easter break renewed from their time off. Much drama has been going on in the hallways due to the declamation semi-finalist practicing for the finals. The finalists have been chosen and will be competing at the finals on Friday, May 4th, at 12:45 P.M. in the gym.

The fifth grade will be sponsoring a cupcake sale to benefit the Fisherman’s Fund. Each fifth grader is responsible for bringing in a dozen cupcakes to be sold during lunch at $0.50 each, so let the baking begin!

The Library will be having a used book sale after the Memorial Day holiday. If you have gently used children's books that need a home, please donate them to the library. The dates to drop-off your donations are May 21 – 24.

Just a reminder, the famous Mrs. Gilmour's chess club meets each Thursday at lunch. So much strategic thinking going on during this lunch time!

Make sure to replenish erasable pens and pencils.  Some should be kept in desks, and some should be kept in portfolios.  Also look to see if loose leaf paper needs to be purchased or notebooks replaced.   Remember to review agendas and sign them nightly.  This will alert you to missing homework and enable students to turn it in for ten percent off.  If you check before leaving the parking lot, you can be sure that your child has needed materials.

Remember that all work should be done in black erasable ink using neat cursive, unless the teacher gives directions to the contrary.  Headings should include first and last names, date, and assignment/page number.  This ensures that your child will receive proper credit.  Please remember to stress proofreading all work.  We are striving to do our best in everything we do.

Fifth graders enter the building at 7:50 and have ten minutes to prepare for the day before the 8:00 tardy bell.  Punctuality ensures ample time to prepare for the morning, complete welcome work, and share in our community prayer.
