Enduring Understandings

·                     The study of the structure of living things is called anatomy.

·                     The study of how structures in living things work together is called physiology.

·                     The human body has a hierarchical structure from cells to organ systems.

·                     Every structure in the human body has a unique role in keeping the body alive.

·                     All structures in the human body work together to keep the human body alive.

·                     All living things have unique structures that keep their bodies alive.

Essential Questions

·                     Why is it important to know about the anatomy and physiology of humans?

·                     Is one organ system more important than others? Why or Why not?

·                     How does knowing about the anatomy and physiology of other living things help humans?

Content

·                     Function and Interaction of Organ Systems

·                     Comparison of Human Organ Systems to other organisms

Skills

·                     Student will describe how organisms are organized from the cell to organ systems.

·                     Student will identify the 11 organ systems of the human body.

·                     Student will describe the function of each organ system in keeping the human body alive.

·                     Student will identify key organs within each organ system

·                     Student will describe the function of key organs within each organ system.

·                     Student will investigate and compare how organ systems interact to keep the body alive.

·                     Students will compare the structure and function of human organ systems with organ systems from other organisms.

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

Assessment

Formative: Personal Project

Life Size Organ System Presentation

Student will create and present a visual presentation on a human organ system that will be compiled with other students organ systems. Presentation will include near life size cut-outs of organs how they function together as well as how the organ system relies on on other organ systems to function.

Formative: Student Portfolio

Human Organ Systems Data Table and Diagrams

Student will complete data table with associated diagrams of the human organ systems using data from student presentations on the human organ systems.

Formative: Lab Assignment

Dissection Lab

Student will complete lab in which they dissect an organism and observe actual organs within the body of the organism.

Formative: Student Portfolio

Organ Systems Comparison Diagram

Student will investigate the organ systems of an organism other than a human and create a diagram that compares and contrasts its organ systems with a humans.

Summative: Standardized Test

Organ Systems Quiz

Students will complete quiz on human organ systems in which they must score at least 80% or retake the quiz.

Summative: Extended Essay

Essential Questions

Student will answer essential questions using facts derived from content in a manner that illustrates understanding of content and how it applies to everyday life.

Stage 3: Learning Plan

Learning Activities

·                     Hierarchy and structure of living things discussion and notes.

o                                            Notes with Definitions and Examples
