Science - Mr. Omelchuck:

This week, students will review the concepts of biotic and abiotic parts of an ecosystem as well as different types of ecosystems that were covered last week. The students will have a short quiz on identifying biomes based on their main plant life on Wednesday. Students will also investigate different types of interactions in ecosystems such as succession and food-chains.

Students will also begin receiving a weekly homework assignment. The homework assignments will cover basic science skills such as units, measurement, and the scientific method. The homework assignments will be due each Friday.

If you have any questions, you can email me at domelchuck@nyos.org.

Texas History - Mrs. Ballentine

This week in social studies, we began the core material of our Spanish Settlement in Texas unit. We learned about the first couple of missions in East Texas, why they collapsed, and France’s involvement in the south. Next week we will talk about the “Chicken war”, life on the presidios and missions, and Mexican Independence of 1821.

Remember to check my website for information regarding class activities and assignments. No homework for students this weekend! Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Fall Fest!

Math - Mrs. Ferguson

In math this week, we finished up our unit on decimals and percents of a number, with a quiz on Thursday.  I’m very pleased with the students’ work!  We are practicing our skills at calculating percent of a number with a real world application today – a trip to Einstein Brothers Bagels!  The students had fun deciding what to order, and then calculated tax and tip on the cost of their food.  (And if some of them order what they planned, these are some kids with HUGE appetites!)

Next week we will be starting a new unit on operations with integers.  We will start with exponents, and squares and square roots of numbers.  Homework assigned on Monday will be due Thursday 11/12.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.  Ferguson@nyos.org

Language Arts - Kelly Cox

Students are getting into the groove of writing poetry. Ah... a new form of writing!  Just a reminder that students should be reading nightly.  Their 7th book documentation was due today, November 6, 2009.  The 8th documentation will be due November 20.

Hope to see you all at Fall Fest!
