6th Grade Reading - Team Alpha

Welcome, Spartans, to Mrs. Leandres's Language Arts Website

Reading is a skill that helps you master all knowledge.

Reading a book is like sitting with an old friend.

Reading connects a parent to a child, even before birth.

Reading conveys messages that can change the world.

Reading enriches the mind and heals the soul.

READING IS LIVING!

                         ************************************************************************

This year we will be mastering the following skills:  listening and speaking skills, word identification, reading fluency, usage of a variety of texts, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, literary response, reading inquiry, and reading culture.

We will be using various texts, which include Houghton-Mifflin Reading Text and an Interactive Reader workbook.  We will also be doing novel studies of Where the Red Fern Grows, Number the Stars, and The Cay.

In my classroom, I use various strategies in teaching our curriculum; some of these include Multiple Intelligence Theory, interdisciplinary instruction, cooperative learning, differentiated instruction, and various other "student-centered" techniques.  We will do SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) at least one class period per week, the students will take notes on important content, and will learn from various technologies available to them in the classroom.  Most imprtantly, students are expected to have a book with them at all times.  Research proves that the more a child reads, the better their language, writing, and thinking skills develop.  My goal is to educate the "whole child" through the joy of reading, and I simply can't wait to get started!  Let the journey begin........
