Pasta for Pennies

Hearst is participating in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Pasta for Pennies program.  The students have been asked to bring in coins they have found.  The coins that can be found in seat cushions, on the floor of the car ... or wherever you find coins!  We will take any kind of coin, even dollar bills, not just pennies.  Our goal is to raise at least $1.00 from each child at our school.  This is our way of helping those in need.  Pasta for Pennies will end February 21st.  Thanks from K-Kids and the Student Council.
(NOTE: The letter home mentioned a competition ... there will be NO competition.  This is all about giving money from the heart).

Who Do you Know?  We Need Your Help.

We are looking for donated items for our auction!  Do you, or someone you know, have a connection at a restaurant, a hair salon, a day spa, a jewelry store, a clothing store, a dry cleaners, a gift boutique, a children’s store, or even a theme park?  How about a night at a hotel?  How about an exciting get-a-way?  Do you own a second home, a time share, or a rental property?  Do you have any sporting tickets or theater tickets?  Do you know an artist, a music teacher, or a personal trainer?  These are just a few suggestions.

Let us know if you can help.  We hope you can!  No donation is too big or too small!
We are happy to pick up a donation.  We can provide a letter for tax purposes.  All donations are 100% tax deductible.  Our non-profit tax exempt number is #33-0829526.

If you have any questions, please contact Tracy Canepa at 619.857.3377.  Your support of Hearst Elementary is greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance for your generosity.

We look forward to seeing you on March 13th.

An Awesome Reading Program

Rockets To Hearst!!

Hooray!  Our school has subscribed to an online library of exciting reading materials, so our students now have access to a wonderful world of books through www.raz-kids.com.  Raz-kids helps students improve their reading skills as they listen to a book read for modeled fluency.  Or, students can read the book to themselves or aloud for practice.  Also, if the computer has a built-in record function/microphone, they can record themselves reading the same book.  Interactive quizzes are available at the end of each book to check for understanding.  The titles rotate on a 6-week cycle, so there are new books every six weeks!  Students can NOW use this website to do their home reading!!  Simply read for 20 minutes on Raz-kids and then pick one of the books to write in on your reading log.

Here is how to access the website and your child's reading assignment from any computer connected to the internet:

       1.  Go to Raz Kids.com  and click on “log-in”.
       2.  Type in the teacher’s username:  djandera and click “go”.
       3.  Find your name on the chart and click on it.
       4.  Enter your password when prompted.
       5.  The books in your child’s assignment and the number of stars he/she has earned will appear on a personal assignment page.  Your child can choose to listen, read, or take a quiz by clicking on the symbols below each book.

As the kids read and complete the online quizzes, they earn stars that they can then use to build their Raz-Rocket online.  Remember, the more your child reads, the better reader he/she will become!  I have already set up a beginning reading level in the computer and I will check on their progress each week.
