"The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place; from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web." Pablo Picasso Greetings from the Art Room, School is well under way and the art room is alive with a flurry of activity. By now most of you are familiar with your child's schedule and what day they have art. I have a small favor to ask of you , please make sure that on their art day they are not wearing their "favorite clothes". I do use all waterbased-materials in the art room but sometimes accidents do happen and their clothes become a bit more "colorful "than usual. If you have an old button down the front shirt send it with them on their art day and I will make sure that they use it. Several parents have asked if they can help out in the art room and the answer is YES, so please e-mail me or call me at the school so that we can set up a time that works for us both. Fall is such a great time of year the colors are amazing and the world outside the artroom becomes a great backdrop for teaching key art concepts such as warm and cool colors, texture, line and observational drawing. Grade 4 has been spending a lot of time sketching outside doing nature studies of the flowers in our courtyard garden, and have recently begun a Still Life lesson inspired by their garden drawings. Grade 3 has been learning about color mixing and we made our own "mini masters" blending colors and using a new medium "shrinky dinks". This lesson proved to be so much fun! In Grades 1 and 2 we have been working hard learning about shapes and overlapping them to create abstract works of art inspired by abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky. In kindergarten we have been cutting away and learning about different lines. The 5th graders have created Dream Jars from clay inspired by their dreams and the art of Surrealism.
