MUSIC NOTES. . .

KINDERGARTEN: We have been singing songs that go along with the letter of the week. Some examples are: Snail Song for "S" week, Teddy Bear for "T" week, Bluebird for "B" week.  We learned about the 4 different ways to use your voice (talking, whispering, singing, calling), and practiced keeping a steady beat with the Counting Song, and Going Down the Numbers.  Loud and soft sounds have been practiced on the drum. Short and long sounds were demonstrated while singing the Alphabet Song.

FIRST GRADE: Students are learning to distinguish songs that have a steady beat, and songs that do not have a steady beat. The song Hunt the Cows  taught the students about long and short sounds, and high and low pitch.  All of the children had a short acting opportunity while performing "The Tickle Rhyme". This rhyme also provided the opportunity to practice making high and low sounds with their voices. We have been practicing the patriotic songs, America, and You're a Grand Old Flag.  Loud and soft singing was practiced in the song and game, Grizzly Bear.

SECOND GRADE: Students learned the patriotic song, America the Beautiful.  Students practiced singing high and low pitch in the song and game,  Here We Sit.  Students gained practice clapping rhythms with the song, If You Need A Buddy.  Students read music notation (quarter note and eighth note) for one and two sounds per beat in the song Play Your Name.  The skill was reinforced by playing maracas, rhythm sticks, and tambourines. Students learned about the music staff, lines and spaces, and music language called solfege (do, re, mi, etc.)

THIRD GRADE: Students performed 4-beat rhythm patterns with the african song, Obo Asi Me Nsa.  Students cooperated to sing the song while sitting in a circle, and passing tennis balls around the circle with the beat of the song.  students performed rhythms containing quarter notes, quarter rests, and eighth notes. Students moved their arms up and down to show low, middle and high pitches while singing the song Kuma San.  They also sang the song using pitch syllables do re mi.  Students reviewed the music staff, lines and spaces.

FOURTH GRADE: Students have learned the 4 basic instrument groups, and are able to identify the sounds of individual instruments within those groups.  We have begun learning to play the fluteophone (type of recorder) . Students can play the notes "A" and "B".  We are continuously performing rhythms that contain quarter notes, quarter rests, half notes, and whole notes.

FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADES: Students began the year reviewing the 4 instrument groups, and practiced identifying individual instruments within the groups.  For the remainder of November and December both grades will be preparing for the Christmas concert (see date below).
