Welcome to the Library
February 2012

At Shrine we are grateful for the Opportunity to Pray, Learn, Grow and Read Together.   Happy Catholic Schools Week!

Kindergarten: As part of our STEM celebration this month, the children will have the opportunity to listen to some of their favorite book characters on the computer.  Our focus will be on following text from left to right and trying to guess how our stories will end.  We will also look at upper case letters at the beginning of a sentence.  We will enjoy valentine stories as we lead up to the middle of the month.

First Grade: Part of the month will be spent talking about how computers help us to keep track of our library books.  We will also take a look at this web-site so that the children can see how I communicate with their parents.  We will continue to do simple work sheets at our assigned tables as emphasis is placed on the importance of working quietly and independently in the library setting.

Second Grade: We will concentrate on maps and scales for the month as children measure lines on a grid to determine the distance between two points.  Cardinal and intermediate directions will also be explored.  We will also focus on two series (Animal Ark and A to Z Mysteries) and enjoy some valentine stories along the way.

Third Grade: The children have been introduced to the 10 main Dewey Decimal System categories so after a couple of more weeks in this area we will move into biographies. Concentration will be on the three types of biographies: regular, auto-biography and collective biography. We will learn how these are arranged and how to identify each type in the collection.

Fourth Grade: We will be focusing on the books that we locate on the remote catalog and practice writing summaries to go along with the selected books.  Some of these summaries may end up as part of our permanent book record.

Fifth Grade: A good portion of this month will be centered around silent reading.  Many new titles have been added to the 5th /6th grade shelf and this will allow students to get familiar with these new additions.  We will also take a close look at a few of our favorite authors thru internet and video interviews.

Sixth Grade: Time will be scheduled each week for book returns and check-outs.  New titles will be introduced as they become available.

I encourage all students to use their local public library in conjunction with our library here at Shrine.  Book reports and research projects assigned by the grade-level teacher are usually given well in advance.  Our library is a great place to find the resources needed for these projects.  I will encourage students to use a portion of their library time to gather information for these assignments. If students are focused, the time spent in library can be both productive and rewarding in terms of developing a passion for reading, time-management in terms of homework assignments, and development of organization and research skills.
