In Music class everyone will...

PERFORM:  develop musicianship through singing, playing instruments and moving to music

CREATE:  using notational tools of music to express ideas, thoughts, feelings and improvisation

INVESTIGATE:  utilize music theory for reading music and analyzing how music is organized

and CONNECT the common parts of music with the other disciplines

Saint Mary's Institute students are expected to participate in all musical learning activities...

WITH GUSTO!!!

All students will be assessed as they participate in class.  21st century skills and aptitudes include creativity, innovation skills, critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration skills, life and career skills such as flexability, adaptability, cross-cultural skills, productivity, accountability and leadership.

And yes, you can give a grade for how well a student performs in music class.  Using a rubric, it is possible to assign fair grades to students based upon performances and written work that are based upon facts taught during class.  No, your child should not be given an automatic A in a performance-based class.  Grades are earned based on your child's demonstration that he or she has mastered the skills taught in class, which are based upon the academic content standards in music.
