Science Units

During the school year in 5th grade we cover 4 units of study in science. We begin the school year with our plant unit. We will review the basic parts of a plant and the plant's life cycle. This unit continues with the study of forest and pond succession and a trip to a recovering forest. Our next unit of study is the systems of the body. We create a 4 foot model of the body's skeleton and then add the circulatory, respiratory, digestive and excretory systems. I use this unit to teach students how to create word documents from a pdf file. These pages become a big book of the body systems. Our next unit is the electricity unit during this unit students will learn electricity safety and learn about series and parallel circuits. This unit culminates with an electric game board that is designed and created by the students using telephone wire and Christmas lights. Our final unit looks at our final frontier, space. We review space studies from previous years and put our knowledge into powerpoint presentations as well as learning the life cycle of a star.
