Tips for Parents to Help

If you are searching for ways to help your student, try these ideas General Tips: * Be involved in your student's education * Attend school functions: Open House, Parent Math Mornings, FCAT Parent Night * Ask your students about their day and what they are learning * Visit the "Photo Gallery" section of the website and ask your students about the pictures and what they are learning. * Model learning - for example, read a book to demonstate that you too are a life-long reader. Math Ideas * Include educational conversation in your everday lives. * Take your student shopping and have them calculate the total bill and how much change they should receive back after paying (They should know how to add and subtract decimals). * Sit down and help your student complete their homework (Be careful not to give them the answer). * Allow your student time to explore on the website. There are many educational games and helpful links. * Sit down and play the educational games with them. Explore the helpful links with them. * Practice multiplication flashcards with your student. Some students still struggle with their basic multiplication facts. * If you go to a restaurant, have your student figure out how much it would be to order two items, three items, etc. You can even do this while you are waiting for your food. *If you are looking for more worksheets, try googling a math vocabulary word. You can also take a trip the School Aids. It is a store for teachers but you do not have to be a teacher to shop there. (located on the corner of Atlantic and St. John's Bluff). Science Ideas *Include educational conversation in your everday lives. (Ex. As you are pouring a drink, ask your student to identify the drink's state of matter. Then ask what the particles of that state look like and act like). *Allow your student time to explore the website. There are many educational games and helpful links. *Sit down and play the educational games with them and explore the helpful links with them. There are many fun videos and fun songs you can sing together. *Go to the public library and check out non-fiction children's books on the topics we are learning in class. Read these books together and talk about them.
