November 19th

1. This week we have been working on POETRY!!! This unit is very fun and interactive :) We have been reading different types of poetry! We are also writing out own poetry...and making a poetry portfolio! Make sure to ask your students what kind of poetry they wrote today!!

2. AR goals are due Nov 20th and also 10 books (stickers) should be complete!!!

November 9th

2. 10 books are due November 20th...thats 10 stickers or 1,000 pages read!!!

This week we will be ending our theme "Give It All You Got"! Our final two stories this week will be on the Iditarod and Me, Mop and the Moondance Kid.  Both of these stories are short, so we can read both in one week.

Skills and Strategy:

3. Sequencing Continued

Vocabulary:

Iditarod:Musher, Handler, Pace, Spectators, obstacles, checkpoint, cargo,

November 2nd

We will be reading the story about Mae Jemison this week in reading. We will be starting the story in class on Tuesday and finish the story on Thursday.  On Monday, we will talk about the new vocabulary words. The selection test will be on Friday! The study guide will come home for students. Remember the students can bring home their textbooks to study and review all week!!

Skill and strategy:

1. Main Idea: main point, main points the author is trying to make, What is the story mainly about?  What is the paragraph mainly about?

2. Sequencing: In order, time order

Students should be reading at least 20 mins, working toward 30 mins now!!! :) AR goals due NOV 20th!! Keep on reading!!

 

October 27th Short Week :)

This week our focus is on the story Fear Place. We will be studying a lot of new vocabulary this week. We kicked off this story by discussing our own personal fears and how people overcome fears. Our class will be reading the story Tues and Wed in class. Their test will be on THURSDAY this week, insted of Friday! A study guide will be for homework on Wed. night. Students can bring home their books each night to review the story at home. Extra support is always great!!

We are also studying Homophones: words that sound the same, but have different spellings and meaning! See how many homophones you can brainstorm.

Examples: Mist, missed; Oar, Or; Owe, Oh; Pale,Pail; Pair, Pear

Strategies: Predicting~ Thinking about what is going to happen next

Skill: Identifying suspense in the story. How do authors use suspense? How do they make a story more suspenseful? What types of words or sentences do they use?

AR: 1/2 Goals are due Nov 20th

 

October 18th

We are still in the reading theme GIVE IT ALL YOU GOT!! Last week we finished the story on Michelle Kwan, the former ice skating champion. We learned a lot about ice skating and vocabulary that relates to ice skating. We even watched a YOUTUBE video of Michelle Kwan skating!

This week we will be reading the story La Bamba. This story is about a talent show. Students will be reading this story on TUES-THURS in class. Students can bring home their books to review the story each night. Their test will be on Friday!!

AR~AR goals are dues on Tuesday by 3:10!!! The AR celebration will be on Friday for those that met their AR goal!!!

 

October 12th

GIVE IT ALL YOU GOT!!!! This is our in Reading for the next few weeks. We have now finished 2 themes: Nature's Fury and Tall Tales. This week it is exciting that we are moving onto our 3rd theme. We will be reading many different stories about never giving up!! How appropriate in school :)

This week we will be concentrating on an autobiography by Michelle Kwan. She is a famous figure skater. This week we are focusing on skills and strategies such as Facts vs Opinions and the elements of autobiographies. There is a lot of information about Michelle Kwan on the internet, try to do some research at home to further your knowledge about this extraordinary woman!

 

 

October 8th

This week we have been working on Tall Tales!! SO far this week we have read 2 different Tall Tales! We read and watched 3 different versions of the tall tale Paul Bunyan! It was fun to see the similarities and differences between these version. On Thursday, we read the story John Henry in class. On Friday, we will be watching the video of John Henry. Then we will be completing a Venn Diagram and comparing and contrasting these versions!!

We have also been studying the elements of Tall Tales! Ask your student what the elements are of Tall Tales. They should be able to tell you a few!!!

 

September 28

This week in reading we will be reading 2 different stories in our reading text-book. This week is a review week and we will be wrapping up our theme "Nature's Fury". This week we will be reading the stories "Night of the Twisters" and "Blizzard". Since we are having a full review week, we will be comparing and contrasting all of the stories we have read about nature's fury. We will also be completing some fun activities such as a Survival preparedness Kit!! Ask your students about this activity sometime later on in the week :)

Things to remember: Students can bring home their textbooks each night to review!!!

September 22nd AR

Each student should have an AR goal located in their blue AR folder! I have conference with each student and created a goal that would be appropriate for each student and their abilities. Each book is assigned a point value. If a student is not sure of the point value, they may look it up on the computer. (I demonstrated this is class) Remember the more challenging the book and the longer the book the more points a book is worth. The less challenging and the lower the reading level the less the book is worth! The student 1/2 way goal is DUE ON OCTOBER 5th! If the student met the goal by October 5th...the student will receive a prize from the AR Chart and extra recess!!! So keep on reading!!!!

September 21st

This week we will be reading a story called "Volcanoes" in our reading textbook. We will be reading the story in class Tues, Wed and Thursday. Students are always welcome to bring home their textbooks to review the story! The test on this story will be on Friday!!

MOLTEN: Melted, made liquid by heat

LAVA: Hot melted rock that flows from a volcano

ERUPTION: A volcanic explosion or large flow of lava

Crater: A bowl-shaped depression

CRUST: Solid outer layer of the earth

MAGMA: Hot melted rock underneath the earth's surface

ADVANCING: Moving forward

CINDERS: Charred bits of rock, ashes

COMPOSITE: Made up of different substances or parts

SUMMIT: The top of a mountain

COLLAPSED: suddenly fell inward

CALDERA: A crater formed by a collapsed volcano

 

 

September 14th

This week we will be reading a story called " Eye of the Storm" in our reading textbook. We will be reading the story this week in class. Students are always welcome to bring home their textbooks to review the story. The test on this story will be on Friday!

2. Studyguide will come home on Thursday to study! If students have their studyguide completed on Friday...they can use it on the test.

September 7th

This week we are starting our first Reading Story from the Textbook. This weeks story is called Earthquake Terror!! Students can bring home their textbooks and review the story each night! We will read the story in class and compete different activities that go along with the story.

Stifling: very hot or stuffy

Jolt: Jerk or bump

Impact: Striking of 2 objects

Shuddered: Shook

Devastation: Destruction

Debris: remains of something broken or destroyed

Ominous: Threatening

Earthquake: Trembling of the ground caused by movements below the earth's surface
