Matter Vocabulary Words * Matter - anything that has mass and takes up space. *Physical Properties of Matter - things that you can observe or measure without changing the matter into something new. *Three Phases of Matter - 1. Solid 2. Liquid 3. Gas - Also called "The 3 Forms of Matter" or "The 3 States of Matter" - We learned that matter stays the same amount when it changes state. No matter is gained or lost. It stays the same amount. *Melting - when a solid turns into a liquid - add thermal energy *Freezing - when a liquid turns into a solid - take away thermal energy *Evaporation - when a liquid turns into a gas - add thermal energy *Condensation - when a gas turns into a liquid - take away thermal energy * Mass - measures the amount of mass in an object - scientist use an istrument called a balance to find - stays the same on the moon * Weight - measures the pull of gravity - is less on the moon. *Metric System - The measuring system used by the rest of the world and used by all scientist. meter - measures length or distance gram - measures mass liter - measures liquid volume *Volume - the amount of space something takes up - find volume of a regular solid with length x width x height - find volume of a liquid with a graduated cylinder (get eye level and read the bottom of the meniscus) - find the volume of an irregular solid with water displacement *Density - The amount of mass in a certain volume (basically the amount of matter in a certain space) - LESS density = FLOATS - MORE density = SINKS *Physical Change - a change that does not make anything new. - a change of size, shape, or state - For example, melting a piece of chocolate. You changed the chocolate becuase you melted it causing it to change from a solid to a liquid but it is still just a piece of chocolate. You did make anything new. - Another example, cutting a carrot. You cange the shape and size of the carrot but it is still just a carrot. Nothing new was made. *Chemical Change - a change that makes something new. - The new substance has new properties. - CANNOT be reversed - Example, rust forming on a nail. The new substance - Rust - was made. Chemical Change Clues * These mean a chemical change MIGHT be occuring - change in color - change in temperature - new smell - bubbles - flame - smoke
