I am Carolyn Nicholson. I am the current 7th grade counselor, class of 2014. I will be your son's/daughter's counselor for 2009-2010 school year. Please feel free to contact me directly by dialing (248) 586-8839 or emailing me at cnicholson@ferndaleschools.org with any questions you may have in regards to your son or daughter academically or behaviorally.

A Little About Myself

I graduated with a Bachelors Degree from Eastern Michigan University in Secondary Education. I taught for 8 years at Fitzgerald High School in Warren, Michigan, where I continued my education at Wayne State University. While at Wayne State, I pursued my Masters in Counseling. I then became a counselor at Ferndale High School in 1999. In 2003 I moved into Ferndale Middle School as a Counselor.

There are two counselors to service students. Ms. Hollis works with 8th graders this school year. We do a looping progression with our students. What this means is that we follow our students into the next school year and next grade to better service them. The students I work with this year as 7th graders will be my students as 8th graders in school year 2010-2011.

Role as Counselor:

* Put together all scheduling for the entire school year for teachers and students.

* Organize and implement State Mandated Testing, such as the MEAP (October), IOWA (April)    and Pre- ACT (8th graders TBA).

* Assess & track student performance behaviorally and academically.

* Serve as a liason/communicator between teachers, parents and students

* Meet with Parents, Teachers and Students in regards to academic and behavioral issues - Organize and run Student Achievement Meetings.

* Provide resources to assist with mental/emotional health. Meet with Social Workers, Special Education Staff and Ferndale Youth Assistance as necessary.

* Provide academic resources to parents and students.

* Provide individual and group counseling as it pertains to the individual needs of the student/s.
