Study Tips

When your child is studying for a test here are some tips to help them do their best:

- Provide a quiet environment, free from any distractions (T.V., music, siblings...)

- Have all materials you need in front of you

- Create songs, chants, or mnemonics (ex. H.O.M.E.S.- to remember the Great Lakes)

- Make it a game

- Allow plenty of time for your child to study, especially over a few days. Don't cram all your studying into the night before.

- Relax, remember that studying should be free of pressure.

Methods for Studying Math Facts

  • Use regular flash cards
    • When children make their own, it gives them even more practice
  • Use Triangle Flash Cards
    • These are a great way to practice fact families
  • Sing or Chant the Facts
    • In the car going to and from afternoon activities
    • CD with math facts set to music can be purchased
  • Play math board games at home
    • War
    • Top It
  • Play math games found on the internet
    • Look at the "Sites of Interest" link on the left
    • Study Island
  • Drill and Practice Sheets
    • Yes, this can be boring but it does make a difference

Daily Practice for five to ten minutes is strongly recommended.
