Reading Counts Reading Counts is a Scholastic program used to enhance reading skills. It is up and running at Ramstein Elementary School! This is a fantastic program that encourages children to read on an independent level. After reading a book, students have the opportunity to take a Comprehension Quiz on the computer. Each quiz consists of ten (10) random questions that pertain to the story read. If successful the child, receives a on-line certificate and earns points towards certificates. We also work as a class and reward our efforts with a Popcorn Party after 100 points has been achieved. The child has three opportunities to pass each test. If necessary, I will write a note stating that a student needs to revisit the story and know it well to complete a test for the second or third time. I have told the children that they must read the book three (3) times to become a "book expert." I am striving for success and will maintain this standard for many weeks. If the child is reading a chapter book, it is not necessary to read it 3 times. If the book is read three times, it may be recorded on the Reading Log three times. Please support this reading incentive and ask your reader how often they are participating. The children are invited to test each day! Each child has been assigned a reading lexile level to achieve success! You may find that the book appears to be too easy, please understand, that I am encouraging success before presenting books that are above your child's level. I want to see what they can do as an independent reader. As second graders, we are learning how to read in phrases, this is only done well if one can concentrate on running the words together, rather than sounding out each word. Thanks....
