Math First Trimester Subject Matter Many children in Room 24 rated Math as their favorite subject. Great! We'll be using interactive DVD "warm ups" that reveal answers for the kids at the click of a button, video resources that introduce and review key concepts in engaging ways, and colorful, easy-to-use textbooks that don't "overkill" the problem solving. I love the real-world links, and how clearly the kids will be able to follow the subject matter and pre-test, check for knowledge as they go along, as well as cummulatively assess their learning at every stage. You can count on weekly math quizzes throughout the year on Fridays, and tutoring from me before school on Fridays (see below). Monday's "Math Repairs" always give a second chance before I record the final grade, and let me and the students see the difference between simple calculation errors and conceptual mistakes. In the First Trimester, Students Will Be... 1.) Reviewing multiplication and division 2.) Learning prime factorization with exponential form 3.) Learning the order of operations...ask your child about, Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally (paranthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, adding, and subtracting) 4.) Discovering how to find the greatest common factor (GCF) in order to reduce fractions to simplest form 5.) Mastering an introduction to algebra using variable expressions and function machines 6.) Understanding decimal comparisons, and representations on a numberline 7.) Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals 8.) Decimal/fraction/percent equivalencies It's a full plate! Some Second Trimester Subject Matter 1.) Finding the least common denominator of fractions in order to then begin adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions...also need to REDUCE TO SIMPLEST FORM ALWAYS :-) 2.) Ordering fractions from the least to the greatest 3.) Comparing fractions to see which one is less than, greater than, and equal to another 4.) Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing positive and negative integers 5.) Reviewing previous concepts Some Third Trimester Subject Matter 1.) Measuring angles with a protractor 2.) Knowing types of angles (acute, obtuse, right, and straight angles, etc.)3.) Measuring the perimeter and area of 3-D objects 4.) Calculating mean, median, and mode (statistics) 5.) Plotting ordered pairs on a four-quadrant graph (positive and negative integers) 6.) More variable expressions and algebra, and review of previous concepts Mrs. Kelly's Friday Math Review, 8:15-8:45 a.m. before school, beginning Aug. 28th and all Fridays thereafter UNLESS I tell the kids otherwise. All fifth grade students are welcome! :-) Since Fridays are quiz days, all of the children have an open invitation to come into the classroom on Friday mornings to get extra help, if needed. Friday is a good day to clean out any cobwebs that might still be lurking from the week's learning. Bring a fifth grade friend--all students are welcome! (I have 8:45 bus duty, so please be on time.) Also, please remember that Progress Reports do not reflect grades from the District's formal math assessments. These assessments--identical for fifth graders district wide--are always given at the end of each trimester, right before report cards, and weigh heavily into your child's grade.
