Mrs. Gray's and Mrs. Stolarski's

Kindergarten Connection

November 2, 2009

·         Reminder: No school for the children tomorrow, as it is teacher training day.

  • Please look at our November Calendar for upcoming events, and share days.
  • Many children were absent this week, as well as myself so it was a bit of a different week, so our class wouldn’t be missing so much of our instruction. I hope many return today, and begin to feel healthy!

Take a peek at last week…

Reading and Listening:

            We read the following books:

            Peanut Butter and Jelly

            From Seed to Pumpkin

            The Pumpkin

            Too Many Pumpkins

(A few Halloween Story)

  • Working on snappy words, I , a
  • Understanding a period and finding one

?  We learned about the letter Dd, but stopped since many children were absent (we will finish this this week)

?  Writing names-Continue to practice this at home as well. Your child should be writing all of the letters in his/her name. At this point I do not focus too much on the first letter being an uppercase and the rest being lowercases. We will focus more on this next quarter.

Literacy Stations:

We are continuing the one station every other day during this time. The children are becoming more independent at working at their station. When this round is completed more stations will be added, and the children will have 2 stations.

Songs and Poems:

            BLACK

            Flying Witches

            Ten Pumpkins

            5 Little Spiders

            The Itsy Bitsy Spider

Alphardy (we typically sing this throughout the week and helps them learn their sounds)

Number songs (we have learned everyone from 1-10)

Math Time:

            *Extending patterns

            *Putting numbers in order

            *Recognizing our basic shapes

*Counting by 1’s and 10’s (have your child show you how to count by 10’s by singing the Macarena)

Science:

*Observing the outside and inside of a pumpkin…we will begin to watch it decompose in class

Social Studies:

*Various symbols on Halloween were learned on Thursday.

What will happen this week?

?  Letter of the week- the letter Dd

?  Snappy Words: a , I, the

?  Math- sorting, number writing with licorice, observing a penny;

?  Theme!  We will continue to learn about spiders and more about bats and will complete this theme this week. They will learn more traits about both animals.

?  Assessments- As the end of the marking period is near I will begin to do our assessments in class. I do have to do this while teaching so it throws off our days a bit until I have completed our individual assessments. This usually takes a week or so until most assessments are completed. During this time, the children complete literacy stations, math tubs, and choice centers. I will begin in class individual and group assessments by the end of this week.

?  Our Theme starting next week will consist on understanding Thanksgiving, the Pilgrims and Native Americans, as well as having fun learning about Turkeys!

News!

?  There is no school this Tuesday for teacher training day, and next Wednesday for Veteran’s day.

?  Please be aware of our P.E. days and make sure your child is prepared on that day.

?  Make sure to pack a snack for your child daily with the appropriate utensils.

?  Notes for conferences went home last week, if you have not scheduled a conference with me please contact me. You will not get your child’s report card otherwise.

?  Turkey Family Projects: This is a family take home project for Thanksgiving!

It will go home today or later in the week. There will be a note attached and have fun!

Thank You!

Thank you to all parents that have donated items for our Fall workshop. This will now take place this Friday from 9:30-10:50. I am still in need of parents helpers during this time to help at stations. If you are able to help out please let me know.

Homework:

I am resending last week’s homework assignment for those that were unable to complete it. You do not have to send in an item that starts with D, if your child has allready done so. Thanks to all parents that continue to do this with their child!
