Second Grade Readers Second grade readers enjoy chapter books and more complex picture books. They can handle multiple lines of small print and rely less on pictures. Books at a second grade level require more inferential comprehension rather than literal. Second grade readers are able to make connections, visualize, wonder, predict and confirm, and draw conclusions while reading. They are also able to use reading as a medium for learning content. In order to effectively do all this, second grade readers must have a large bank of known sight words and strong knowledge of letter/sound correspondence and spelling patterns. Practice with sight word recognition and writing rhyming words can help in these areas. Remember, though, that the best way to help your child improve in reading is by having your child read to you every single day. Reading to your child also provides multiple benefits, both academically and emotionally. Look for the class monthly Scholastic Book Orders to help enrich your home library. Please visit the sublinks to the left for resources, links, and articles on various reading topics. "There is only one thing a boy or girl growing up and wondering about the world needs to know. Reading is magic." --R.B. Priory
