Second Grade Handbook

Classroom Management

Our class will follow Cedar Fork’s motto: SHINE!

S-Show safe behavior

H- Have a positive attitude

I- I will be a team player

N- Never give up

E- Expect success

In addition, our class will have the following STAR expectations:

  S- Stay where you belong

  T- Talk only when appropriate

A- Always follow directions the first time

R- Respect all people and belongings

On the first day of school, we will discuss how these will look in our classroom.

If a child is not abiding by the classroom expectations, he/she will be asked to complete an expectation slip, which I will sign and then staple in his/her planner at the end of the day. If necessary, I will meet with the student to discuss the situation. Having to complete expectation slips will incur the following consequences:

1st slip: Warning

2nd slip: Phone call to parent

3rd slip: Principal’s Office

If a student does not have a slip stapled in their planner, s/he abided by all expectations that day.

Rewards

I believe that students should be rewarded for good behavior. These are the rewards in our classroom:

If a student abides by all expectations for the day and does not complete a slip, s/he will put his/her name on a ticket and put the ticket into a jar. At the end of each week, I will pull a number of tickets. These students will get choose a reward of our Reward Menu. I will also designate a “Clean Chair Pocket” at random for a student who keeps his desk area and chair pocket clean and organized.

B.E.E. Binders

This 3-ring binder houses everything students and parents need to keep up-to-date with what is going on at school. B.E.E. binders are important! They help students to establish good organizational skills which carry on throughout their time in school! They contain: money/notes pocket, reading log, spelling grid, Tuesday folder (blue), homework folder (green), class list, schedule, and Wake County calendar.

Homework

Each day, your child will bring home a planner with their homework assignments written in it. Each student will have a a GREEN homework folder in his/her B.E.E. Binder which contains the assignments for the week. Completed homework is due on Friday. The children will write their homework down for different nights but they can work at their own pace during the week.

Tuesday Folders

On Tuesdays, your child's blue Cedar Fork folder, filled with notices, school information, and assessments,  will be found in his/her B.E.E. binder. Please make sure you review the paper clipped assessments with number grades on them and return them to me inside the Tuesday Folder. It is very important that I have them back so that they can be placed inside your child’s portfolio.

Weekly Newsletter

Every week, the class weekly newsletter will be emailed to you. Please let me know if you need a paper copy instead. The newsletter will have pertinent information valuable to you and your child. Please be sure to read it each week.

Your Child’s Education

I teach according to the second grade objectives on the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. More specific information about the second grade curriculum will be shared at Open House September 19. Please consider making arrangements to attend.

School Attendance

Official school hours are from 8:45-3:45. Children may not arrive at the classroom before 8:45. If a child arrives after 9:15 he/she must get a tardy slip in the office. If a student needs to leave early, they must be signed out in the office. If your child’s transportation arrangements will be different on any give day, you must write me a note specifically stating the change. If your child is absent from school for any reason, you must send a note upon their return. This absent note is required by the office for each absence.

Grading Scale

Students will be graded on a scale from 1-4. Papers marked with a “P” are practice work, not assessments. More information about grading will be presented at Open House.

Specials Schedule

Every day the students will go to a special class from 11:05-11:50, with the exception of Day 3 when our specials are from 9:20-10:05. This is a rotating schedule.  Reminders about specials will be included in the newsletter for Media and PE.

·        Day 1: P.E.

·        Day 2: Technology

·        Day 3: Art

·        Day 4: P.E.

·        Day 5: Media

·        Day 6:Music

**A copy of the specials rotation schedule is linked to the bottom of this page.

Lunch

We will go to lunch each day from 1:05-1:35. If you would like to join your child for lunch, please sign in at the office and meet them in the cafeteria. Please make sure your child has lunch money every day if they are buying. Every student has a lunch account in which you can put money ahead of time. If your child’s account is running low, he/she will receive a sticker from the cafeteria and a notice will be sent home as a reminder to add more money. Breakfast costs $1.00 and lunch costs $2.00.

Recess

Recess time will be each day from approximately 2:30-3:00. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather and playing. Students should wear sneakers for recess. Your child may bring in sneakers to change into before going out. If it is extremely hot or cold, or raining, we will have indoor recess. Playground expectations will be discussed the first day of school.

Drinks

Due to our extremely busy and full daily schedule, students will be limited in getting drinks during classroom time. If you would like, you may send a water bottle (only with water) for your child to drink throughout the day.

Birthdays

In an effort to promote a healthier lifestyle and in recognition of tough economic conditions, our school has decided to limit birthday. Instead of recognizing each student birthday individually with treats provided by the child's parent in the traditional way, our school has decided to honor all students in the class who celebrate their birthdays in the same month on one day with one snack. Birthday recognitions will take place on the last school day of the month in each classroom, and grade room parents will be coordinating these treats by contacting the parents whose children have birthdays that month.

Parent-Teacher Communication

Occasionally, I will send home letters with your child. Please check your child’s planner, homework folder, Tuesday Folder, and backpack to see if there are any letters from me. If you need to contact me, I can be reached at the school at 388-5240 and I will call you back as soon as I get the message. I will also respond to letters. Please tell your child to give me any communication first thing in the morning. In addition, I check my email every day. My email address is cdalecki@wcpss.net. Please also utilize the classroom website (linked to the Cedar Fork website)

I look forward to working with you and your child this year. I know it’s going to be a terrific year!

Sincerely,

Miss Dalecki
