Reading Tips - Set aside a special time each day to read aloud to your child. (5-15 min.) - Read with expression. - As you read, encourage your child to get involved. Invite him/her to discuss pictures, read bits of text, predict what will happen next, and discuss favorite parts. - Reread favorite books. Simple Activities - Change first letter - ex. If I change the m in mat to an s what's the new word (sat) - Match letters to sounds around the house - ex. place a b on the bed, t on the table, etc... - Draw attention to letters and words in the environment: signs, cereal boxes, toy boxes, menus, etc... - Alliteration (all or most words start with the same letter) make up your own or read in books, poems, songs, etc... - Read an alphabet book and discuss (could play 'I spy with my little eye something that starts with m or the /m/ sound') - Make own alphabet book - Magnetic letters on refrigerator or cookie sheet (find the letter m, find the letter that makes the /m/ sound, find the letter that you hear at the beginning of map, etc...) - Use white boards to practice letters
